Eltroxin in the fridge

So finally went to a new doctor, had been using a walk in clinic but figured I’d better see a regular one.. very nice and helpful, I need to lose weight and bring my BMI (Cholesterol, high blood pressure!!) down before I can be put back on the pill (helps to regulate my 3 periods a month)

Anyway he said are you storing your eltroxin in the fridge? I said no, never heard of that so he said that to ask the pharmacist and he said you should yes..

Anyone else do this?

Do you live in the UK? If so then there's no need. Leave in original pack which is usually a blister pack in a box, cool cupboard, no problem.

I live in Ireland, cheers 🙂 had kept them beside my bed for years lol

Thyroid meds may be OK in the fridge but always well away from the ice compartment, but probably better not to put them there at all.

NEVER IN THE FREEZER as they cease to work properly when removed after just a few days.

The issue of storing levothyroxine, in a refrigerator or not, has been discussed many times.

A number of years ago, Australia adopted a policy that their levothyroxine tablets must be stored under refrigeration. That permitted the manufacturers to claim a longer shelf-life/later expiry date. But we have to remember that the temperatures there can be very, very high.

If it were policy in the UK, we would expect the Patient Information Leaflet to tell us. Wouldn't we? I quote for Eltroxin 100 microgram tablets but similar is said on all of them.

5. HOW TO STORE ELTROXIN TABLETS

Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children. Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the carton after EXP. Do not store above 25°C. Store in the original package in order to protect from light and moisture. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.

The only reason I really question using a refrigerator is that our products - including the immediate packaging - have probably not been properly and fully tested. Levothyroxine can lose or absorb humidity and that might have an impact on its efficacy. The blister pack might, or might not, be proof against transfer of humidity and oxygen in a refrigerator. And, when the tablets are removed, they might be subject to condensation.

For now, my choice would be NOT to store in a refrigerator in the UK. But, in the summer, I would attempt to keep them in a cooler room.
