Apparently the GMC have suspended a British doctor for practicing functional medicine with regards to the treatment of thyroid conditions. He was alleged to have requested extra tests, prescribed T3 and supplements over and above that was needed by his patients.
The ripples for thyroid patients attempting to gain access to better treatment IE: T3) will be felt globally.
Unfortunately this is the way things are going. Any forward thinking doctor, who is keen to look deeper into a thyroid patient’s problems, will think twice now. These cases make it so much harder for all of us to get any sort of individual treatment. We are all individuals, and there are many reasons why a “one size fits all” type of treatment won’t work for everyone.
If we all took our cars to garages, because they weren’t running properly, but the mechanics only tested for one thing. We would be a bit disappointed, to say the least! “Sorry” they would say, “Your oil levels are fine!” So we would happily take home our badly running car? I don’t think so!
I just hope that things will change, but not while doctors are penalised for thinking beyond the guidelines!
