Selenium

Back in 2016 I was thinking of supplementing with Selenium but decided to get my levels tested first as I read too much could be toxic. My levels came back slightly over range so I never tried it. Whole blood * 154 ug/l (76 - 140). I am thinking of doing the same to see if it will help with getting my antibodies down and the awful anxiety I feel every damn day. Should I do another blood test first as I was thinking of taking 200mcg Pure Encapsulations|?

I would advise retesting to see if selenium supplements would be helpful. I’ve not heard any link to excess causing an increased cancer risk, but I know more than 400mcg day from food or tablets can be toxic.

I’m trying not to get too hung up about reducing antibodies. Others have suggested on this forum that its best to focus on reducing inflammation to improve your thyroid health.

I can relate to having anxiety- I’ve really struggled with this, but getting my thyroid medication and key vitamins (eg D3/K2 and B12) optimal has helped. I find magnesium has also helped lesson my anxiety. For me, talking to others about anxiety issues has helped me to realise I’m not alone. So many people struggle with this and it is a symptom of having a thyroid condition, which (unfortunately) is little known by the medical profession.

It seems selenium is rather key for us, and useful to preventing the iodine storm (whatever the term is- graphic in the link below). I was following this lady's books and successfully brought antibodies down until they bounced back up again (in her books she says if the antibodies come back up, it's likely to be infections, and now I'm with a functional medicine practitioner, I can say that is actually the case!)

With selenium, I was taking it while following the books and I still am with the functional medicine practitioner so it does seem important. I remember reading somewhere that the studies done on high levels causing toxicity had been because of industrial accidents.

Test your Selenium (Se) first. If it is low AND your T3 level is low then the lack of Se is probably causing your T3 deficiency . T4 and t3 are called selenoenzymes because they need Se to function. I always recommend eating 2 Brazil nuts per day which should give you your daily requirements. After a few weeks test your Se, T3 and T4 levels. If your Se level is still low then eat 3 Brazil nuts - but keep checking your levels because too much Se will be toxic. If you get your Se via food, your body will "tell" you if you arean overdosing. But yes, you can take a Se pill, that's not the way I do it though.
