I have Hashimotos, and I am so much better for taking Kefir, Sauerkraut , and other probiotics. The water Kefir is the best for me.

in reply toHypopotamus

Thanks, I've been recommended them for a problem with system candida, so I'm glad they don't have an adverse effect.

MapleMoose,

With Kefir, Sauerkraut etc you may need to be careful as it can increase histamine in some people and if your body isn’t good at clearing it it can make things worse. This is related to the DAO enzyme if you want to know more there’s plenty more information through Google.

Also there’s different strains of probiotics so it all depends.

in reply toSerendipitious

Thank you, I plan to take a certain strain through supplementation. I do not fair well with fermented foods and drink

I have just read the book 10% Human and would suggest that we should all be taking more probiotics, kefir, fermented vegetables and live yoghurt. I do and will be increasing my intake now.

Thanks, appreciate your thoughts

Yes, I’m in remission from Graves’ disease and I take probiotics. Not all the time but regularly.

I tried water kefir which was nice but I couldn’t keep up with the amount I was producing - long story.

I’ve tried sauerkraut too but I’m not keen and same with yoghurt so I stick to tablets I've tried both live that had to be kept in the fridge and regular probiotic tablets.

in reply toFruitandnutcase

Thanks, I going to buy supplements now I know they are ok.

I now have five regular 'customers' for my water Kefir, not to mention my friend's young daughters who ask for it nearly every morning. Since I have been flavouring mine with pineapple juice, they can't get enough of it and I have to say "no more now".

We (husband and I) liked it but just couldn’t keep up with the quantities I was producing. I keep ‘burping’ the bottles in the fridge in case they popped. It’s good stuff and flavouring it with pineapple juice sounds amazing. Not surprised it is in demand.

I really need to try again and see if I can reduce the quantities I make so that we can drink one lot before it starts again. I was beginning to feel as if I was in the kefir equivalent of the Magic Porridge Pot or my own version of the scene where Micky can’t stop the water in The Sorcerer ‘s Apprentice 😉

There is a discussion article out there somewhere mentioning pre-biotics to prepare the gut for pro-biotics.

Hi I can't take it - wish I could after years on antibiotics every 6 weeks or so - I have two autoimmune conditions and my consultant spotted that every time I was on probiotics it showed up in blood tests that the immune system was going crazy trying to fight off the so called invasion of bugs - not being able to identify which were good bugs and which were bad.

in reply toposthinking01

Thank you... I think I will try them slowly just in case I get similar reactions.

I take one made by Lamberts and it definitely helps my digestive issues. Plus if I have to have antibiotics.

Not only Ok but I would say absolutely necessary .I take a very strong Kefir I get imported from wales but you can make you own,I also buy a very good prebiotic from the same flks.I cannot recommend you take a look at the work of shaun of the chuckling goat company she does a very good blog. She has been at the forefront of the new knowledge that out gut health

is crucial to a healthy immune system. If you cannot afford a course of her amazing stuff then make your own, Saurerkraut, kimchi also helps. She is available for advice and her blog is free. It has made the world of a difference to me. Just get my gut balance more healthy.

in reply toravensgeo

Thank you for your thoughts but I am not really into that sort of thing, so I will only be popping a pill I'm afraid. It's great that you've had success with it yourself 😊.

thats fine ,yu must go with what you are happy with but it is really important to find,if you are going down the pill route that you find with with the right mix of pro and pre bacteria and that the brand is proven to survive the stomach to reach the gut where is will be needed. Good luck.

You have to find the right one. I tried a bunch of different kinds that did little to help my digestive issues. So frustrating!

Finally, I found a prebiotic/probiotic that is working well. It’s CodeAge SBO Probiotics + 50 Billion CFU.

Codeage SBO Probiotics and... amazon.com/dp/B07F1GPXref=p...

“SBO Probiotic + is a powerful fermented food and botanical formula providing 50 billion CFU* of soil-based organisms and prebiotics contained in a Delayed Release Capsules ( DRCaps ).

SBO Probiotic + provides six different strains of probiotics, including Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus clausii and Bacillus coagulans.

Last but not least, SBO Probiotic + also offers an organic fermented botanical blend with sprouted chia seeds, ashwagandha, tumeric root, basil leaf, sprouted broccoli seed, sprouted pumpkin seed and more.”

Thanks, I am looking at L Rhamnosus and L Reuteri specifically for an apparent system candida overgrowth.

I highly recommend Dr Josh Axe (eat dirt book) and Dr Mark Hyman when it comes to gut health.

I have a probiotic each day, make my own sauerkraut, kimchi to have a tablespoon of each per day. Also for microbiome diversity don't forget to garden without gloves, walk in different woodlands, stroke animals.

Hello. For us, people with thyroid immune condition, probiotics are ok. Together with unityinflammatory diet it's very well reduce that terrible fatigue and pain. There a lot of reliable resources on line. Please make research. All the best to you

in reply toolgadimitri

Thank you, it seems probiotics are the way to go

I have just ordered a combination supplement from iherb which has bifidus, L rhamnosus, and acidophilus among others. I have gone gluten free and seem to have issues with candida. These specific strains are meant to alleviate fungal issues and a leaky gut. I am hopeful as this is another pick in my pocket for the ever growing supplements in my cupboard.

This is absolutely true. Gluten intolerances and many reasons for the increasing numbers worldwide of autoimmune disorders and cancers are due to the adulteration of pure wheat grains and the cross contamination to other nearby growing grains (oats, barley). There are huge conspiracies around mega food industries, pharmaceutical companies and politics in the western world, especially America. I have lived in both the U.S and Britain, America is worse with its genetically engineered crops and meat sources. The grains today are hybrid to enable faster crop/farm to fork. With genetic modification and hormone, pesticide farming, the human body is not designed to digest all these contaminants. The western world has even contaminated monocultures across the world (Asia, Africa etc) in the pretence of food aid by giving them these adulterated grains and as a result, previous cultures who lived more purely are now getting illnesses they never used to. These genetically adulterated grains are also effecting our eco systems, and water systems. Soya is another adulteration, it was never supposed to be a source of human food hence consumption of it is suppressing thyroid function, enhancing autoimmune responses and cancer inducing. So many people are not aware that the modern day food is slowly killing us off. As humans our diet should be pure whether it be meat, veg, grains, dairy and sugar for us to be healthy. There is a super programme on Amazon Prime called the What's Wrong With Wheat amongst others on the dangers of modern day farming. If you have Amazon Prime it's well worth a look. If it wasn't for these contaminated grains and were farmed pure, none or most of us would not be gluten intolerant. I think we need a diet from all the food groups (bar sugar) to be fully healthy if everything was farmed purely and organically. As it isn't anymore, we are now so often depending on specialist diets and pre/probiotics so we don't kill our guts..... Sad state of affairs!!

Anyway, sorry, I waffled on, it's just a hot topic for me, as it is so hard if not impossible to eat pure food these days, and this thyroid disorder management with it's restrictive diets and ever increasing pill popping is rather tiresome.
