Im awaiting a ferritin test result but noticing pale gums and thinking my spaced out feeling is possibly this. In the past I’ve definitely noticed I’m better over 80/100.
I just wondered if anyone has found that they struggle to sleep well when ferritin is on the lower side?
Waiting levels to adjust for a thyroid test but I’m actually wondering if I’m on too much thyroxine, unless it’s the iron causing insomnia?

Low vitamin D and /or low FT3 can be cause of insomnia
When were vitamins last tested?
What vitamin supplements do you currently take?
For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested. Also EXTREMELY important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12
Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially if you have autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's) diagnosed by raised Thyroid antibodies
Add results and ranges if you have any
Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and before eating or drinking anything other than water .
Last dose of Levothyroxine 24 hours prior to blood test. (taking delayed dose immediately after blood draw).
This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, best not mentioned to GP or phlebotomist)
Is this how you do your tests?
Private tests are available. Thousands on here forced to do this as NHS often refuses to test FT3 or antibodies or all vitamins
Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have special offers, Medichecks usually have offers on Thursdays, Blue Horizon its more random
Hi yes as I say, waiting for ferritin test results and I need to wait a little longer for thyroid.
I take a boots breastfeeding multi vitamin but in the past successfully got ferritin up very well through diet, spatone and avoiding milk / cheese during the day.
Iron tablets affect my stomach very badly.
Just asking if low ferritin has caused issues sleeping at night when thyroid panel is good?
What is in your multivitamin? The quality of vitamins contained in multivits is often poor and vitamins are not always compatible taken together. Have you had vit D tested? If not then suggest you do as even with supplements it may be low.
I’ve now ordered a cytoplan b12 supplement too. And going to up the folate intake in food; I may have some knocking around somewhere. And go back on my ferritin boosting diet.
Ensure you take the methylated forms of B12 and folate as they are more absorbable. Pernicious anaemia society recommend levels of B12 higher than 500 as neurological symptoms can emerge below that.
Once you've got B12 to sufficient level you could take a good B complex with the methylated forms such as Thorn basic B which will keep all the B's balanced.
The vitamin D Council recommend a vit D level around 100nmol or mid-lab range. Check out links on responses to posts on vitamins by administrator Seasidesusie.
I'm not sure about the range difference for B12, it's an interesting question. I had one test where the top of lab range was around 500 and then next test top of lab range was around 900, same GPs, don't know if it was the same lab though. Maybe PA society can clarify why lab ranges vary so much?
Take B's in the morning as I find taking at night can disturb my sleep. Do you take magnesium? It can help with sleep but may not be good when breastfeeding so check it out.
