Ferritin

I have just got the results for a full thyroid blood test I paid for privately, except for some reason the Ferritin was not done, they have offered to do it again no charge, I wasn't going to bother but having looked back at the last result which I was told by GP was fine I wonder if I should go back.

Do you think this is a worryingly low result?

Ferritin 30 RANGE 15 to 400 From June last year.

Helen, yes that is low. Optimal is half way through range. NHS won't prescribe when in range but you can buy Ferrous Fumarate over the counter (except Boots). Take each iron tablet with 500mg-1,000mg vitamin C to aid absorption and mitigate constipation.

Thank you Clutter, do the iron tabs come in different sizes?

Helenback, I think 210mcg is the usual over the counter dose but higher doses are available on prescription.

Well yes if you have paid and they have offered to do it again no charge. You need to monitor this

I agree ferritin is vital, and a low level is bad news for thyroid sufferers. But I'd be wary of trying to achieve a ferritin level over mid-range to be honest. If I saw a result like that I'd start being suspicious there was an inflammation problem.
