Hi I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of printable information relating to underactive thyroid and ear problems? I have a meeting with ENT next Wednesday and I imagine they won’t know about the connection. My GP didn’t seem to.
I am desperate to get to the bottom of the cause of tinnitus, ear pain, fullness, and headaches in and around my right ear.
Thanks as always for your help ☺️

I have come to the conclusion my ear fullness and head pressure is over medication - from referred pain from the thyroid. This could be total rubbish and I’d be glad to know! But I definitely get it if I increase my meds. As to tinnitus (and shrieks in ear) Thus has lessened with continued fairly low meds’ and my hearing has also improved. Not sure this helps but I’ll follow your post to see what you learn!
I see this was 11 months ago so it’s probably a dead post. I’d now say I was under not over medication! Makes mire sense I guess. My tinnitus is a lot better now on 100 t4 and 12.4 T3. No ear shrieks and kind of normal hissing.
hi I have had tinnitus for years , diagnosed with chronic fatigue /M.E very poorly stopped work , recent private G.P started thyroid tests said this is my problem. That's another story after life destroyed 6 years, ago. Recently started medication. I saw hearing specialist at hospital years ago and consultant stated its part of the brain causing the noise. I have it bad when I feel very exhausted and poorly, even sometimes Morse code like noise 😌 and constant loud noise. I ignore it or would have gone crazy by now. I wont take medication for it as relaxation, mindfulness meditation, resting and selfcare lessons the noise. Its a thought you may like to investigate. It will be interesting if it is my thyroid making me so unwell if the tinnitus goes away or lessons. Stress is a cause as symptoms impact our brains as we feel unwell causing us stress and anxiety. There are research papers on this. I did not fancy the medication as I should imagine it affects receptor, neuron activity in brain to block the noise and the side effects etc , got enough to deal with. Hope this helps it depends whether you can cope with the noise or if there is another reason for your tinnitus as you said ear fullness pain , headaches .... I get this . There are tinnitus clinics your gp could refer. Keep me posted . Kind regards
I was interested to see that you have a Morse code type of noise, this is what I experience too. I haven’t had any help from the medical profession, but I do find it varies and sometimes is hardly noticeable. However, when it is bad, it’s very hard to ignore. I would also agree that stress makes it worse.
Yes it's hard to ignore. I find music and relaxation techniques do help re channel my mind help to a degree. I pray that just being diagnosed with a thyroid problem and as gp states is the route of me becoming ill I will feel better on medication in the future. I was a P. E teacher and teach mindfulness now as the science behind how it can change the way our brains neurons work may help with symptoms especially tinnitus. 🙏
I have been on thyroid medication for over 15 years. Unfortunately my GP and the local CCG will not allow prescribing of T3 ( liothyronine) , which my private endocrinologist recommended.
I do use Yoga and other relaxation techniques to help, I have also found treatment for my low B12 has made a difference.
Thank you. I've just started medication, as being so unwell I have had reactions to certain medication so very low dose to start. It's crazy how you cannot receive t3 when NHS uses money on other things. I'm on on levo thyroidine so will wait to see if things get better as early days yet and will see with the tinnitus. Hope you get somewhere with help. Kind regards
You may already have investigated ear syringe-ing (no longer performed by most GP surgeries).
I have a good friend who has expunged his tinnitus symptoms by having the wax taken out of his ears. He goes privately to have it done. There are places on Harley St (this is where he’s been) who will do it for £100 or so and am sure other less prestigious addresses will do it for less.
I have real problems with (for non-specific reasons - it’s been investigated) lack of hearing and am planning to have mine syringed to see if it helps that, but know that in my friend’s case his tinnitus went away.
My hearing problems pre-date my thyroid ones
If I tell my friends / children I’m fairly deaf they think it’s amusing, but it’s really not fun. My sympathies.
It might have been because I had an ear op, but I've told various friends to try asking their GP as mine told me that they didnt recommend syringing any more.
I have ear issues ie dizziness, veritgo, ect.. and I have found using ear candling really helps! Although I will say once I started thyroid meds for hypo the dizziness has gotten less often.
When it’s done you can cut open the hollow candle and there is usually wax and water that comes out. The water is represented by a white powder. And the wax well you can tell it’s wax. 😀
It could explain some of your symptoms. Unfortunately the treatment options are poor. The only treatment I've ever been given for it is a steroid nasal spray which didn't help at all, although I've tried the treatment a few times.
Yes I had a hearing test and cane out ok although I couldn’t hear as well on the side with tinnitus. I don’t think I have menieres either as I don’t have vertigo. I also have very wax free ears. I’m wondering if I have a TMJ problem?!
