Results - anyone on T3 /t4 combo?

Hi Guys,

Got my blood results from my consultant but no reference range. Does anyone know what this means? From googling it seems I’m overactive? However for the past 4 years I’ve been taking medication for an under active thyroid.

Anyone else have a good experience with T3/T4 combination? I was getting good results then they stopped so the Dr has increased my T3.

T4: 17

T3: 5.9

TSH: 0.07

That’s all the results I have unfortunately.

Ask endocrinologist secretary for the results including ranges

Just results without ranges are meaningless

TSH is almost always suppressed on any dose of T3. So ignore low TSH

Most important results are FT3 and FT4

What vitamin supplements do you currently take and when were vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 last tested?

I take vitamin D and iron supplements. My B12 results came back normal.

How low was vitamin D when started on vitamin D supplements and how much are you currently taking?

B12 and folate. You need the actual results and ranges on these

B12 range is very wide. (Typically 190-750) Many thyroid patients have symptoms of low B12 when still well within range ...under 500 can be too low

Iron - obviously GP should be regularly retesting iron levels if taking iron supplements. Iron needs careful management

Do you have autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's) diagnosed by high thyroid antibodies?

Without the ranges, it's anybody's guess, but going on the most common ranges I've seen, I don't see these results as over medication.

If you have been diagnosed hypothyroid, which you say you have, you can't become " hyper " but might have symptoms of over medication.

What symptoms do you currently have ?

What medication are you taking ?

I'm sure if you contact the endo's secretary she can furnish you with the ranges.

Generally T3 range is 3.1-6.8. and T4 range is 12 - 22.

The TSH is not a reliable measure of anything on it's own, once on thyroid hormone replacement.

It's not up to her to decide how much information you need. The law says you are entitled to all the information. She's probably afraid you'll contradict her if you know all the details. They have to protect their frail egos.

If you have an underactive thyroid you can't become overactive, the thyroid can't regenerate. However, you can be overmedicated but it's impossible to say without the ranges. Googling can't tell you what your ranges are unless your Health Authority happens to have a website with the ranges quoted on it.

My NHS lab range for FT4 is 7-17 but we also see 9-19, 11-23, 12-22 and others. So you could be anywhere between half way through to top of the range. But you also need the range for FT3. Ring the consultant's secretary or the hospital lab and ask for the ranges.

TSH is not particularly relevant once on thyroid replacement hormone, it's FT4 and FT3 that tell us what we need to know.

OK, so they're not particularly large doses.

So, are you having any symptoms that make you think that you are "overactive" or overmedicated?

What do you actually mean by

To be able to comment usefully, we need current results/ranges and results/ranges from the test which resulted in your doctor raising your T3.

Different labs have different ranges so you need to know what they are. I had to remind my Endo to put my ranges on as I am not tested locally so my GP not aware of the ranges.
