Help please: Hi just terrified at moment all... - Thyroid UK
Help please
If you are in the UK and you're feeling very unwell you can ring 111 for out of hours doctors. I don't think your hands should be swelling so you need to see a doctor.
Hi still waiting for blood results but was on biosoprol I blamed all off it on that for a year think I was wrong heart sorted but this is getting crazy doc thinks its hypothyroidism so this could have been going on 10 months and building just scared just hoping for results as soon as possible thxs
As this is a thyroid forum it may be better to begin a new post with 'Post ablation: are my symptoms beta blocker side effects or thyroid?' in the title. You then may catch the eye of a member who's been through the same procedure and has had side effects from beta blockers and knows the difference.
My uncle has been through this (ablation surgery) and his mum had had a total thyroidectamy (my grandmother lived a long life), so it's definitely plausible. Please don't let the word thyroid frighten you - people do live long lives without one or a 'dodgy' one.
As to the swelling, I'd do as Nanaedake says and call out of hours GP line to be safe.
When you get blood results make sure to post them on here. The admin team and other members are very knowledgeable and honest, but also very sympathetic, so I am glad you've found this forum.
Not sure about hands swelling but other symptoms (and a lot more!) could well be thyroid related. The thyroid helps deliver energy to all parts of the body and there is a huge list of possible symptoms.
Hang on in there and try not to panic - even if the Dr says thyroid is ok you could still be hypothyroid. Good on the doctor for at least sending you for tests for it.
Most doctors are taught to think if results are in range then you must be ok. Which isn't always the case with thyroid!
Post results when you get them
Thxs I will
Meno27, is this an RAI ablation to treat Graves disease?
This treatment leaves most people hypothyroid afterwards, that's part of the aim of the treatment. Because some of your thyroid has been burned away, there usually won't be enough left to meet your needs and you will need to take thyroid hormone replacement for life.
Doctors can be horrifically bad at explaining to patients and dealing with symptoms. It can feel really awful to by hypothyroid, especially to suddenly be plonked into it. The feeling of being hypo is scary, depressing, and can feel like we're going mad.
If you're hypo now, you will need to start Levo ASAP. You'll be started on 50mcg, which is a low dose, and you should have a new blood test and a dose adjustment every 6 weeks until you feel much better. It can take several months to get to feeling well, and you may continue to feel a bit crap for a while, maybe even a bit worse at first.
SilverAvocado I think it's a cardiac ablation as the OP has posted about it in the AF forum.
Hi no it was ablation of the heart just had talk with receptionist at doctors trying to get a doctor to phone back said one result was very low what does that mean hypothyroidism
THXS
Hi Meno27, as you haven't been suddenly plonked into being hypo by having your thyroid ablated if hopefully won't be quite as bad, but most of the rest of what I said will apply. Being hypothyroid can be very scary. But try and hang in there. Everything with thyroid moves very slowly, and once you start on hormone it will probably be a couple of months before you feel much better.
Once you get your thyroid panel results you can share them on the forum if you'd like any advice.
