Pain in the Neck!

Good morning to all.

I’m looking for any advice on a new symptom that’s popped up. Graves returned this year in March after 5 years remission. I had TT planned for this week, but it was cancelled due to a combination of lack of resources and my thyroid levels not being under control. I started treatment on 40mg of Carbimazole in March but the levels were still going up so I was prescribed 60mg 6 weeks ago. Carbimazole has just been reduced to 40mg this week, so it’s finally coming down. I also have a large multi nodular goitre. In the last few days, I have pain down the left side of my neck, just under my ear that feels like it’s being pressed down on. I’m also finding swallowing difficult. There doesn’t seem to be any swelling. My heart rate is averaging 118 with propanalol. The pain became so uncomfortable last Saturday I called 111, saw a GP who although sympathetic, couldn’t give me any idea what was causing this pain. It’s not so severe some days, then it comes back with a vengeance. Any advice from anyone would be really appreciated

Thanks for all the support over the years.

Hi Yvettel,

Please check my profile page - this is pretty close to what happened to me and maybe some of what I wrote will help you out. My goiter was pressing on a nerve in the neck. On the left side it was the size of a grapefruit and on the right the size of a navel orange. It is not unusual for nerve pain to be present with a goiter. I spent thousands of dollars on physical therapy only to have the pain disappear after my TT. Nothing would have helped on my case with the exception of removing the thyroid. Do you wake up exhausted in the morning and want to sleep all day? This is a sign of a problem. I am not suggesting you need a TT - I am simply saying to check out the cause. A CT scan or ultrasound might reveal the problem for you.

Wishing you well and the best of luck - I hope you can figure it out.
