Hi pabhoo,

Yes, thyroid does affect serotonin levels, which is why thyroid disease sufferers feel anxious and depressed.

I’m attaching a link for you with a full text article that explains how it works. It’s a bit heavy going, but you will get the idea. Hope it helps!

Here’s another one:

B vitamins (B12) contribute to hair growth because they help in the production of red blood cells, and this apparently plays some role in hair growth.

Wishing you all the best!

That’s right. Thyroid is the master control for our body and handles everything from our metabolism to emotions . Powerful stuff! Hair loss could be from your thyroid condition itself and either under or over medication. You don’t say what type of thyroid disease you have. But either hyper or hypo causes hair loss. Best wishes to you.

Hi pabhoo, That would be enough reason for your hair to be falling out. You likely need a dose adjustment. I saw your other post this morning about your bloodwork and you have gotten some good answers there. Hope you feel better soon and you can get your hair back! All the best.

Here's hoping you got through - I know it's evening in the UK now. When I couldn't get through to my MD, I would just show up at the office - it's hard to ignore you in person and if I really was desperate, I just wanted answers. I acknowledge in advance that approach is not for everyone and if you feel really ill, may not even be practical. All the best.

As far as I know, it is not possible to measure serotonin in brain without being dead first (can test in spinal fluid). The theory that depression is caused by low serotonin, which needed to be raised has never really been proved. See journals.plos.org/plosmedic... So no way to tell, and no way to know if it is significant anyway. The end of this post by NHS Psych Dr David Healy explains that SSRIs are actually less effective than old-style tricyclics, which suggests that the serotonin theory doesn't hold water davidhealy.org/making-medic...

Hi Angel,

I agree that there is no good evidence of low serotonin causing depression -but there is extensive research on the effects of thyroid function on mood and emotions, etc. I also agree that the older drugs are much better than the newer SSRIs.

Sending you good wishes and have a great evening.

Absolutely. I feel dire when my free T3 is too low, but I doubt it has anything to do with serotonin and I'm not about to get my brain sliced up to find out

😄 - I think we have enough problems without that! All the best.

Low progesterone and low testosterone can lead to low serotonin... Taking a zinc supplement can help raise these hormones. If you are zinc deficient you will also have weak hair and nails... Selenium and Iron are important as well. Taking something like Dr Myhill's Mineral Mix which also has vitamin d and b12 may prove beneficial. It lasts me for ages, so is very economical.
