Solid cystic nodule

Can I ask what a solid cystic nodule is lol it might be obvious but does it basically mean that a nodule is fluid as it is cystic or does it mean it is solid? It's on my ultrasound report and when you google it either says that there are solid nodules or cystic which can be all liquid or part solid part fluid

Hi Cazza,

It is my understanding from my surgeon that if a nodule is both solid and cystic it contains both solid and fluid components at the same time. Cysts that are largely fluid have a lesser chance of harbouring cancer cells than solid ones do.

I know you have already been online, but this site is quite good and I have copied the link to the page on cysts for you - it even provides the different risks for different types of solid versus cyst nodules. Hope this is helpful - I don’t want to duplicate what you found, but this page seems to say it better than I can summarize it and is also confirms what my own doctor told me.

Thanks for the reply 😁 and the link! Right that makes more sense! I was thinking that a nodule was either solid or cystic so when I read solid cystic nodule I was confused but it sounds like then that my cyst must just have solid components. The first thing I thought was that all cysts were just liquid so wasnt sure about the solid bit! Thanks that link has helped 👍

I spoke with the ultrasound technician after my last thyroid ultrasound, as I have numerous nodules, including ones like you are describing. "The more the merrier" was the technician's motto for remembering whether to worry about them. She's not 70, so I can't say she's been doing this for fifty years, but she has worked in the field quite a long time and said the only time it's worth worrying about something detected in the thyroid gland is if it's the only one; one nodule or cyst, standing all by itself in an otherwise healthy-looking gland is cause for concern. Multiple nodules are worth only a weak, "Meh."

Thanks for the info!! 👍👍 that's good to know. I've got multiple too mainly u2 on ultrasound, one large dominant one extending down into chest is considered u3 because its vascular so had the fna for that, just waiting on results, I imagine I'll get a thy2 benign result fingers crossed 👍👍
