GPS and their knowledge of tsh levels ?!??

Looking for a logical explanation?......

I got my dad to go to the gp app today to chase up endo as still no reply about T3 issue and my dad said she is not being monitored and her tsh is 12.21 and the gp said to try and Justify themselves and the endo for not monitoring me, o well we don't really do anything if it's around 11 wtaf?!?

12 years ago when I got sick it was when it reaches above the range or above 5.5 so why now is it double as believe me I was severely ill any where above the optimal range

How do they have an actual clue they have no idea how ill people are it's absolutely ridiculous makes me so mad we live in this stupid society who has decided this ridiculous protocol

But what I want to know is is why does nice guidelines and the CCG and Dr Toft etc all state patients to feel optimal health are ideally looking to achieve a tsh of under 1.5 on T4 only and ideally under that with T3 also that's to feel healthy like a normal functioning human being so how can the gp And endos etc get away with fobbing people off who are actually very seriously ill ? Can any one clarify as I am majorly confused?

I am so sorry you have been through this. Unfortunately you are not the first and wont be the last. You should be getting treatment - in the UK they start treating over 10, and in the USA it is over 5. I would advise writing to the GP and the Endo (so you have proof) and asking why they are not following the guidelines. They know if it is in writing, they can be held legally liable. Also ask to see the medical notes - these are free and you are legally entitled to see them. There may be a clue in there why they are not treating you.

If they dont reply in a timely manner, take this to PALS with your letter. Good luck.

Which guidelines are you referring to? Part of the problem is that we do not any NICE guidelines, and they are currently in the process of being written.

I have seen on this site, people pointing to the nice clinical knowlege summaries but these are not guidelines, they are summaries of current practices which, may actually be wrong.

The fact that there are so many people on the thyroid forums, seeking effective treatment, rather confirms that the current knowlege and treatment is inadequate. Which is why guidelines are currently being compiled. They are due for release in November.

Perhaps this Editorial from the European Thyroid Association could help to knock some sense into doctors. Pay particular attention to Table 1, where a grading system is proposed to indicate the severity of the hypothyroid state. TSH of >4.1 to <10 mU/l with normal FT4 and FT3 is the entry point for Dx of hypothyroidism, and TSH >= 10 mU/l with normal FT4 and FT3 kicks the severity up a notch.
