I have to have an exporatory test to discount cancer from symptons . It will include ct scan with iodinising radiation. As im hypothyroid is there a risk of thyroid cancer or further thyroid problems after this, The test is nothing to do with my thyroid

Hello dontbelieveit,

So sorry to hear about situation and the possibility of cancer. If you have any thyroid condition you should not have any contrast material with iodine. You may wish to ask your doctor for an MRI and they can use gadolinium instead.

I hope everything goes well for you and sending you positive wishes and good thoughts.

Though i risk seeming paranoid there are problems with that too

You are right - and you are not paranoid either. I have a feeling people with autoimmune diseases may respond differently to dyes etc ... lucky us!

I had a CT scan and drank something ,no idea what .Subsequent PET and CT scans at the same time involved radioactive glucose going into a vein via a cannula .To be honest I was more concerned to to find what was wrong and had it improved to worry about iodine.

well mine was a uti which i recognised as such but because gp didnt prove it i have to go for tests. Had cystoscopy and fine but need scan. Cant weighup thepros and cons because its unlikely to be anything...just small doubt now theyve sent me

In general don’t forget if a contrast is used be sure & drink plenty of fluids afterward to remove it from your system as quickly as possible.

If your gut is telling you that you have a urine infection why not request to see a Urologist or Nephologist for a second opinion as to the need for scans verses a MRI or what not.

Specialists working in private practice may have more open schedules I’ve found (I’m in the states). The question is really what would your GP do if they were in your shoes, in your exact circumstances? What would they subject their own body to?

Thank you clarrisa, There is no discussion in nhs she just said we ARE referring you. We dont see endocrinologists in nhs to ask advice and gps know less than us often because we research latest data on our illnesses
