CT scan appointment

Hi,

Iv got to have a CT scan with iodine contrast and have read that people with thyroid disease can have adverse reactions to the iodine.

I am unable to tolerate some fillers in thyroid meds and im not sure if i want to take the risk of the iodine contrast.

If anyone has had the contrast could you let me know how it went.

Thanks

Christine

Yorks, intolerance to tablet fillers won't cause an allergy to iodine contrast. Some members have felt 'thyroidy' for a couple of weeks after iodine contrast. This link says iodine contrast can increase TSH and increase FT4.

Hi I've had an MRI with contrast to check my pituitary and had no problems at all. I'm on Levothyroxine but also have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome so can be sensitive to meds etc. I know you are worried but, if you can, you it's better to have the contrast as it will give the consultant a clearer picture of what he's testing for. By the way, if you haven't had a CT before I'd suggest closing your eyes whilst in the scanner. I got motion sickness type feelings due to the 'spinning of the inside ring' of the machine :-)

Yes i have had one before...like you i closed my eyes and still prefer the CT to an mri as your not as closed in.

Hi Christine, I have been on thyroxine for nearly 30 years. I had a cta on my brain ago with contrast dye and had a bad allergic reaction. My whole upper body swelled up, hives, and generally felt terrible for at least 3 days. Now I have to take preventative meds from the doctor before I have another scan and the reaction was fairly mild thank goodness.

That sounds really terrible and scary...can i ask you if you had an instant reaction or was it some time later.

I started feeling a bit strange a few hours after the scan. My body started flushing, I was very hot, headaches. Then the hives came and my eye lids and lips started swelling. It was a most unpleasant couple of days but my doctors know now and can give me meds to subdue the reaction when I need to have the dye again.

Thanks...i guess im most worried because i have lots of flushing, hotness and eptopic heartbeats normally and worry that the contrast will make it worse.

I have had contrast too and I had a bad experience to thought it was just me but saying that I had it on a different occasion and was totally fine. Me personally I don't like them but they are important hope it's nothing to serious hugs x

Hi

I had to have a MRI with the contrast dye and was really worried about it before hand and told the radiologist and said I really didn't want it and she abruptly said "well it won't give a clear result then"

The Doctor came through and said "you can get a allergy to anything so if you do get a reaction we can deal with it straight away". I agreed to have it.

After the scan I asked if I was going to react to the dye would it have happened by now and she said "yes" but obviously reading Whiskys1956 reply this is not so.

I was absolutely fine.

My daughter who is allergic to lots of different things also had to have the dye and they gave her steroids to take for 2 or 3 days before as a precaution and she was fine. Why don't you ask your Doctor about it

The very best of luck browny

I wish i was not such a coward with things like this...usually its not as bad as the fear.

I do appreciate other peoples expereinces and the fact that despite their fears they got through it.

I dont know if i can face another visit to my GP and to be honest i dont always beleive what they say...
