How do you feel after treatment for underactive thyroid?
Hi. If you’re given the optimal dose for you then you should lead a full healthy life. For the last few years I’ve been at the mercy of the NHS guidelines but prior to that I enjoyed the care and consideration of understanding doctors and a lifestyle full of fun and adventure.
The good old days!
(I should add I’m talking from a lifetime on thyroid medication; if you’re only recently diagnosed then it will take time to reach the right dose.)
It depends how poorly you feel to start with but it is possible to regain pretty much full health to the extent that you can do everything you did before perhaps (like in my case) plus some.
Once on correct dose of thyroid hormones and optimal vitamin levels most patients should see return to full health, sometimes significantly better than before starting treatment. We have often been going slowly downhill for years or decades before treatment is started
It can take a while to rebalance, but with full Thyroid and vitamin testing this is possible
Personally I’m feeling better, but not 100% as I’m not quite on the optimal medication. I’m getting there though
When diagnosed, I was described by the Endo as being so ill I had one foot in the grave. Treatment was initiated and I was perfectly well on levothyroxine for 30 years until the menopause messed things up.
I had a complete thyroidectomy and have been having horrible side effects ever since I've been on the meds to the point of having to call off work and getting additional meds to combat the pain and headaches I was having and yes I know I shouldn't but each time I stop and feel completely fine. I'll add that the times I've stopped I was going to see my endo doctor soon so I'm not off them for long.
I've been prescribed Levothyroxine 125, 100, horrible side effects (to include coughing). Prescribed Synthroid 25 was doing fine symptom wise but hypo, increased to 50 and the symptoms started again so, I stopped again.
I hope you have a better experience with whatever meds you're on or end up on.
