Low white blood cells on carbimazole- remove thyroid?

I have an overactive thyroid due to Graves’ disease. I was in carbimazole a couple of months before I was hospitalised as I had essentially no white blood cells. I was given some injections to increase my WBC count, and discharged with the advice that I now have to remove my thyroid and there is no other solution. I’m only 20 and would ideally like all my body parts to remain within my body. Is removing it really the only option now?

Hello. Sounds like you have been unlucky. I have graves and developed hives while taking carbimazole and so I was changed to the 2nd choice drug - PTU. I can’t actually remember if decreased WBC’s were a side effect but you could ask and enquire if if PTU could be a option to try before surgery. Best wishes.

I would agree with Qwerty12345 above. You have an alternative called PTU (Propylthiouracil).

Hello there! PTU has some similar side effects to carbimazole on blood cells so be cautious - it’s worth a try however. See this link for detailed information:

Hope this is helpful! Good luck.

I don't have Graves but empathise with your predicament. I have read good things about taking Acetyl L Carnitine for lowering cellular uptake of all thyroid hormones. Look it up... they give it to cats and dogs who are hyper and it will not compromise your blood cells. Check your electrolyte levels and take zinc picolinate if low, for white blood cell regeneration - the Thyroid UK main site has a list of nutrients low in Graves disease.
