In the UK, the pity is that the endocrinology/doctors seem to have been told that we've not to be diagnosed as hypothyroid until the TSH reaches 10. This is high and if we were in some other countries we'd be diagnosed if TSH goes above 3+ with symptoms.

If thyroid antibodies are present in your blood, you should be prescribed regardless of TSH.

It comes as a great surprise but when you know you can improve and feel much better you can turn your health around. Many on this forum even source their own thyroid hormones and haven't looked back, although some may not like to do this and feel that will cause them even more stress.

Before levothyroxine was introduced by the NHS we were diagnosed upon our clinical symptoms alone (no blood tests then) and given a trial of NDT (natural dessicated thyroid hormones - the very original in use since 1892. It saved many lives and people gradually worked up to a dose which relieved their symptoms.

Nowadays blood tests have taken over the skill of doctors.

These replacements hormones are still in use today but removed by the NHS and recently T3 too.

Hi all, Well doctors today a 20 something year old sat infant of me telling me my results was normal I told her that i have been told i possibly have Central Hypothyroid and looked into it on NHS choices and theres differently suggest this she said my TSH reading was normal my free T4 levels normal i produced a print off from the Thyroid uk where it states the correct levels she said that was not correct I said my TSH is rising above normal my Free T4 was rock bottom and once again i told her my symptoms how i was feeling, how my day was, day by day and she still insisting my levels are normal as thats whats stated on path report.

She would not listen i stayed calm the whole time apart from one moment when i felt totally frustrated and cried because i felt put down

She said that T3 would not be checked because my levels are brilliant OH REALLY

I left the surgery sat on the bench pouring down with rain and just sobbed could not believe an hour passed just sat there

After writing everything down finding lots out and in a 10 min appointment that she reminded me about several times i was just left empty no will to do a thing.

I don't know where to turn what to do next just been hiding or feel like hiding feel so terrible TOTALLY DEVESTED

Can you please explain what Central hypothyroid is?

MaisieGray profile image
MaisieGray in reply to ter1461

ter1461 Primary hypothyroidism is where there is a dysfunction of the thyroid gland. Central hypothyroidism is where the thyroid is fine but the problem lies elsewhere: secondary hypothyroidism is where the problem is with the pituitary gland not secreting TSH, and tertiary hypothyroidism is where the problem is with the hypothalamus not secreting TRH. So for instance, one cause might be a tumour on the pituitary gland.

Hi, so sorry to hear the problems here. Could you tell me where you get NDT from. I'm on 100mcg Levo and my face shape is changing, excess weight gain and chronic insomnia. I would like to try NDT to see if my symptoms improve. I'm new to this forum, but having read these comments, I'm going back to my GP for all the tests advised here!

Responses of where to source thyroid hormone replacements aren't permitted on the open forum.

Therefore if you would like information you'd have to put up a fresh post asking for a private message to be sent to you. Or click on the person's name which takes you to a private page.

It is against the guidelines to post information on where to source prescription medications without a prescription.
