Ringworm and prune fingers after starting NDT!

Hi.

I am on a self trial of NDT (Thyroid-S), in desperation to alleviate my very obvious Hypo symptoms, even though I have not officially been diagnosed!

I started taking 1/4 grain, and I immediately felt an awful lot better, which I increased by 1/4 grain every 2 weeks, but when I increased to 3/4 grain, my BP and heart rate went crazy, so I stepped back to 1/2 grain, which made no difference, so I stopped for a few weeks.

Just started taking 1/4 grain again (week one now), with the same enormous improvement in my general health and wellbeing.

I have noticed though that I have developed ringworm in the crutch area (jock itch), and "prune fingers" with white and flaking skin on my palms and in between my fingers (after taking a shower or washing the dishes).

Anybody else experienced this?

I know that ringworm is commonly from touching an infected person or animal, but it is also known to be caused by an allergic reaction?

I noticed that I got this when I 1st started NDT, but did not put 2 and 2 together until I started taking it again (it abated when I stopped taking the NDT)!

Could it be that I am allergic to porcine?

Ringworm is a fungal infection, not an allergic reaction; and finger ends becoming white and wrinkly after immersion in water is perfectly normal. I doubt either have any connection to the thyroid or to pigs. Fingers becoming wrinkly without immersion in water 'may' have other causes such as dehydration, diabetes, excema ......

Hi.

It was actually a bit difficult to describe my sudden crotch rash and white and flaking skin on my fingers and palms! The rash is in 3 places, 2 of which are round and about the size of a 1 pound coin, and 1 is narrow and about 2 inches long? Both exhibit the same mild itchiness and flaking skin at the border of the rash. Feels slightly lumpy in the centre. The white and flaking skin covers most of the fingers (from fingertips to base of fingers), worse on the fingertips though. It is also most noticeable at the base of the fingers (between each finger and thumb and along the life line and heart line). Very much like athlete's foot, but covering most of the hand and fingers?

It all came on as soon as I started taking the NDT, which seems to be a bit too much of a coincidence?

I will treat with an anti fungal cream, and see what happens!

I don't want to stop taking the NDT because it is doing me an awful lot of good, even on such a low dose!

If you're unsure what it might be, I think that it would be better to have a Dr look at your rash and flaky skin rather than treating it with an antifungal in the absence of a definitive diagnosis. If it's ringworm, it's definitely fungal in origin, but if it isn't, then it could be an allergic reaction, or indeed, anything else, in which case you'd be delaying proper treatment or taking the correct avoidance action to remove whatever is causing that allergic reaction. Whilst correlation doesn't imply causation, if you noticed these symptoms started when you began your NDT and abated when you stopped it, it might be worth testing that out again, to see if it repeats. Have you checked out the ingredients of your particular brand to see if there is anything amongst the excipients to which you know you have an intolerance?

Hi

As the rash and the white and flaking skin on my fingers/palms came on as soon as I started taking the NDT, it seems to be too much of a coincidence that I suddenly developed a fungal infection at the exact same moment in time?

I had stopped taking the NDT for a few days (because I went hyper?), and have started it again at 1/4 grain, but this time I will stay on 1/4 grain for a month before attempting a 1/4 grain increase.

Thanks for the advice.

Ringworm can only be transfered by a person or animal that has an active infection. The go-to for this was Gentian Violet but you cannot get this any more. Cattle are much more prone to it than pigs, by the way.

It sounds much more like a variety of eczema, dont know what it is called, but I get it when I am underdosed. Always on my thighs. It is suddenly there, and grows in a circle with a blank middle, much more noticable in a hot bath! Then after a month or so, they all go! I showed it to a GP once, but he just shrugged as it was not life threatening.

I hope once you find your right dose your skin will improve and you will feel so much better.
