Thanks diogenes I'm not surprised, I suspect that many ailments have a basis in thyroid disorder, and more so lack of efficient and effective T3 processes. If T3 impacts on every cell then lack of T3 surely has implicated effects on many disorder.
Thank you diogenes, for your really useful post. I too have vitiligo which I first noticed shortly before I found the nodule which resulted in partial thyroidectomy. The vitiligo does seem to have settled considerably since going grain and dairy free. The Endocrinologist associated the vitiligo with connective tissue disorders and tested for APS (Hughes Sticky Blood) but didn't make any connection with thyroid although 5 generations now, or any other auto-immune (also many).
That is so interesting. I had thyrotoxicosis twice and endocrine disorder with hysterectomy. I don't have vitiligo but my grand daughter does but do not know if children have any link with thyroid disorders. Having had a melanoma removed, I guess there is a a fault in thyroid metabolism, as the research given by Diogenes seems to provide a high percentage link in adults. NHS do not have any advice to parents, and have spent hours finding information on vitamin A and vitamin D and zinc which can be linked to deficiencies in formation of melanocytes. B12 seemed to help my grand daughter but she does not take the supplement now. Getting kids to take supplements is not easy!
Thanks for your reply. The interconnections are so involved - I had been supplementing folate and B12 to improve slightly low levels so serum levels seemed ok, but other markers and increasing symptoms looked like B12 deficiency (which runs in the family, as does PA). Lots more reading and it appears that poor methylation can affect ability to use B12 and folate at cell level and that it can be due (in some cases) to active MTHFR defect. Poor methylation seems to have considerable ramifications but can generally be easily improved, once you know about it. I am in the process of getting some (private, as doctor thinks I'm wrong!) tests, so I'll know if I'm barking up the wrong tree. Links seem to be strong between B12D, PA and Vitiligo. Of course, now I wish I hadn't supplemented folate or B12 until properly tested as it skews the results. My best wishes to you
Thank you so much for your reply, How can methyl pathways be improved. If you take a methyl capsule supplement will it be affected by digestive juices in the stomach? It is so frustrating when you have all these family histories leading you to find the missing key and the doctor says he thinks you are wrong. They never asked me for family history of skin cancer when I went for check ups even in oncology department - so no genetic tracing of faulty genes where I live!
Have a look at Micki Rose's website, Pure Health Clinic. Lots on MTHFR and methylation do's and don'ts and other references to read purehealthclinic.co.uk/2018...
I have bought some good grain- free liquid methylcobalamin and liquid methylfolate and am starting very slowly with a low dose. (I have low stomach acid as is common with autoimmune conditions and don't seem to be absorbing well so avoid tablets/capsules, plus multiple medication/chemical/food sensitivities so very careful to get clean supplements and start low!).
The tests I am doing are through Micki's site - one functional (sent off last week, should be about a week for result) so I can see if genetic weakness has been expressed and one is a general DNA so I can look at more than just MTHFR. I may well be wrong, but so many things tie up that I need to check. Hopefully test kit will arrive this week and it takes about a month.
It is infuriating that no-one asks about family history and of course you don't always know it unless someone prompts you to ask around, and then you start to put a 'potential vulnerability' picture together. We all know that that doesn't mean that you will get all of those conditions yourself, genes have to be expressed and multi-factorial conditions have multi-factorial causes but it is a useful guide nonetheless. Good luck!
Hi Diogenes have read this article - was doing research into zinc and copper supplements
for vitiligo to help even the skin tone. Research is ambiguous some research links these mineral deficiencies and others say there is no evidence. Was looking at Vitamin A skin cream which might help improve the melanocytes to produce more pigment. B12 and the B vitamins and other minerals are in some health vitamin online companies for skin hair and nails. It's knowing the right amount of minerals and vitamins per day as unless the vitamin and mineral levels are checked the supplements may be too low. Thanks for jogging my memory.
