Not sure what coconut aminos are ??? :-)

Aparently its gluten n soy free and a good replacement for soy sause..

I don't think coconuts contain that much protein so won't contain all the amino acids you need. If you want to take an amino acid supplement, I'd go for a "traditional" one or BCAAs or even Braggs liquid aminos (or just eat more good quality protein, perhaps with digestive enzymes to ensure good digestion). If you want a sauce, try a gluten-free chilli sauce. Unfermented soy sauce is not a good thing if you are hypo (fermented tamari is OK and is wheat-/gluten-free).

I've read varying reviews. Some love it, some hate it - same with soy sauce, really. I think you're just going to have to try it for yourself. I don't think it's going to be beneficial for you, but it won't do you any harm. Myself, when I want a substitute for soy sauce, I use Maggi's Arôme, which I buy in France, where I live. I don't know if you can get that in the UK.

However, Arôme is not gluten-free, and contains monosodium glutamate. So, you might be better off with coconut aminos. I only use it at Christmas, anyway. :)

Hi grey goose .. yer i was just interested in what people thought of it and the taste... i was on slimmersworld for 2 years and used tons of it... Brilliant considering i had thyroid and hashis

Well, I've never tried it because it's so damned expensive!

Does Slimmer's World include soy sauce in its menus? All I know about SW is that it's based on low/no-fat, so very unhealthy. But, I always suspected they put some form of soy in their own-brand products. And, I bet a lot of SW members are hypo!

If you go for there Chinese selection etc.then yes there lol ts of hi amounts in there meals.. i have to eay i didnt really have systems before i started slimmers world ...i dont know if that's what made.it worse .. but i did consume high amounts of soy sause.. dark and light..

The soy sauce could very well have made symptoms worse. Unfermented soy sauce, and unfermented soy in general, has the effect of stopping thyroid hormone getting into the cells. So, you can have good levels of hormone in the blood, but hypo symptoms because it doesn't get into the cells. Soy sauce is supposed to be fermented, but isn't always. Plus, there's now some doubt about how safe fermented soy is for hypos, so in my opinion, best avoided altogether.

Million Dollar question. If the soy did cause me problems over the last couple of years...and im no longer using it.. do you think things could calm down or the damage would now be done and thats it ??

greygoose profile image
greygoose in reply to Spotydave

No, I don't think the soy sauce would have caused permanent damage. But it depends if the soy was the only cause of thyroid problems or if it just made existing problems worse.

Probably just made existing problems worse, because as I said, it stops the hormone getting into the cells, so if you have good levels in your blood but still have symptoms, it could be due to the soy. But, if you didn't even have good levels in the blood, then it wasn't the soy causing the original problem. If you get my drift. :)

ps if It helps you out all I have eaten a plant based diets for years and over the years I have eaten more soy, I guess I enjoy eating it a couple of times a week, if it makes a difference to my thyroid levels I would not have any idea. However it is important to me to also eat the foods I enjoy, I can't worry about everything I eat cause I am already plant based so. Hope things work out for you.

no problem, just give yourself time to adjust changing your diet and things like that can take time to do. I wouldn't personally try do everything at once but that is just me. Up to you but depending on what sort of food you are planning to eat you tube has really helped me In terms of recipe ideas etc over the years. Even if you don't do anything else, I would def recommend juicing for example straight celery juice is amazing if you are looking to heal anything in the body. Good luck with everything.

Spotydave,

I have used coconut aminos in salad dressings & stir fries. It is high in amino acids & other nutrients as made from the coconut sap.

The taste is similar to soy (dark, rich & salty) but is expensive. Tamari contains less nutrients but is another alternative taste wise.

Cheers rad yes its definitely expensive... But i might give it a go ... Ive not had soy for a couple of months and dont miss it really but its nice to have a choice. And especially if im going to start restricting my diet... It does have very good reviews...

I think this is the biggest problem of today... Everything is done to make food and products last as long as possible .. and we suffer for it... The government are scared stiff of the food industry so they get away with it..
