T4/T3 Prescription Query

Hi Everyone!

I recently, about 7 weeks ago started on my own sourced T4/T3 and have been gradually building up to 2 grains a day. I have suffered with Hypothyroid since having my first child five years ago. I have never felt well, and as per normal the doctors were just happy to settle me at 100mcg. To be honest, T4 / TSH levels were OK (mid to low in the range), but T3 was very low in the range after my Medichecks bloods, so it became clear that I don't really convert well. I started taking vitamins after it showed I was low in the ranges for all of these, but I didn't really feel much of an improvement.

I can honestly say that in the last 2 weeks I have really started to see an improvmenet. Dry skin has gone, hair is shiny and healthy, and my acne around my jaw line has disappreared (not sure if this is just luck rather than the tabs but I was always convinced that it flaired up worse when I felt worse - who knows!)

Now Im just wondering if I should have remained on the NHS prescribed T4, and supplemented with T3 only? I feel a bit nervous to not be supported by my doctor with this, and to not have access to Levo if the suppy of T4/T3 mix should dry up?

What would your thoughts be on returning to 100mcg of NHS Levo, and supplementing with T3 only? I presume that this would show in bloods and make my TSH go all over the place?

In an ideal world I would like to have constant access to Levo as something to fall back on at least, without having to tell my doctor that Im supplementing with T3. Can Iachieve this? Thanks All! x

Alternatively push for referral to NHS endocrinologist and ask for trial of T3

You said you are starting to feel well. I would be overjoyed to be writing that. Personally I would not change anything to fit into a GP who won't know what they are doing. You have managed to make yourself feel much better after 5 years of a GP failing to do that for you. Keep on doing what you are doing with the help of the forum. You are on the right track.

Sources of T3 are getting stretched so keeping to an NDT that is working for you is probably going to be easier at this current point in time. Do your own blood tests and get help here with the results. Read all the books you can find about treating with NDT.

I suspect you will do better keeping the doctor well away from your treatment.
