I had a total thyroidectomy on Monday, as I was suffering from Graves Disease, I had toxic multinodular goitre.
Everything went ok and I am recovering well so far.
The question I have is I read a lot that people put on weight after their thyroid was removed but I'm losing. Everyday that I have got on the scales I have lost another pound which is quite unusual to lose a pound a day, I am on Levothyroxine 100mg and the Drs said it would take a good 7-10 days to get into my system so it can't be the tablets surely? Just wondered if this has happened to anyone else? Not that I'm complaining about losing the weight lol.

Donna I'm sure you are relieved it is all over now. I wish you all the best for recovery.
No doubt many others here will reply with informed experience soon.
Just my opinion I'm not surprised you've lost weight after the op. This op was a huge trauma on your system, plus part of you removed so no wonder you've lost weight, it will take time to recover. I doubt you are up and about as normal yet - nor should you be.
Take it easy, you must accept this is a major thing. Try to rest, take care and I hope in time all will be well. j x
I have no thyroid, removed for Graves‘ disease and I have never put on weight. Maybe monitor it for a while and see how you go. When was the op? I know I lost weight immediately afterwards, because I did not eat properly for a few days but then I went back to normal and have stayed that way ever since. But we are all different...
Awww that's great to hear you didn't put on weight either, I had my op on Monday of this week, I've been eating normally since Tuesday, id say I've maybe cut just a little bit out but generally eating normally. I've read alot that no matter how much dieting and exercise people have done after the thyroid had been removed people were still putting on weight, I know everyone is different though.
May I ask what meds you are on as you say you did not gain weight after TT and I was just wondering if you had Levothyroxine alone or have had T3 added to that? Any information would be gratefully received as I too have had a TT
Hello Jaxie28, I am on T4 and T3 and very thin. I eat well (apart from my favourite morning coffee and cake!), eat all home-cooked food, plenty of butter and olive oil and loads of fruit, veg, fish etc. I am not gluten free, although I know many on here are. I do feel that lots of the heavily processed gluten free products are full of harmful ingredients and may not be good for thyroid patients but that is probably the wrong thing to say here. Each to his own, I suppose. I eat exactly what I feel like and as much as I want but I never over eat. The strange fact is that even before I went on T3, I still did not put on weight, so I cannot credit T3 as being the reason for not being overweight. It is all a mystery...
