You were given Levothyroxine because you were hypothyroid - your own thyroid can't produce enough natural thyroid hormone so you were given replacement thyroid hormone.

Your results have now come into the normal range, which means that the Levothyroxine is working. Your tests are normal because you are taking the Levothyroxine.

It doesn't work like an aspirin - when you have a headache and take aspirin it goes away.

When you take Levothyroxine it's replacing the hormone your body can't produce.

If you stop taking Levo then you will go back to where you were before because you're taking the hormone away again so your levels will go out of range.

If your thyroid doesn't work, replacement thyroid hormone is for life.

Why not read up about your condition so you can understand it - start here and work down the purple menu on the left hand side

You should have a blood test every six weeks. It should always be a 'fasting' test (you can drink water) and allow a gap of 24 hours between last dose of levo and test and take afterwards. Most take levo when they get up with one full glass of water as tablet could stick in your throat and wait about an hour before eating as food and coffee can interfere with the uptake of levo.

Some prefer a bedtime dose so if you do so, you'd miss this dose if having a blood test next a.m. and take after blood test and at bedtime as usual.

I think a once a year test is normal once you are on the correct dose for you. The tests you l have been having is to get you to the right level as quickly as they can.

We are started with a low dose for two reasons, our body needs to get used it it and also all tablets contain fillers, some to provide bulk and some to keep it stable. Sometimes we can find that the fillers upset us so are then advised to try another brand which may suit us better. So it's easier to do this on a lower dose so it doesn't upset us too much It takes 6 full weeks for each new dose to fully get into our system as itxdkowly builds up so that's why we wait for 6-8 weeks to look at results and decide if we need more.

However if now you are one yearly tests and you feel something isn't quite right then you can post and ask on hear or ask your doctor if you can be tested and explain to him that you don't feel right and give him as much information as you can.

I agree with Silverfox7 that once a year is enough except when symptoms change. I was started on 25mg Levothyroxine which made me feel great for a while but then I started feeling very down and began behaving irrationally. My doctor said that is wasn’t my thyroid but I insisted on a blood test. He phoned two days later to double my dose.

Having had hypothyroidism for 5 years now I can feel the changes in function from over & under medicating. I go from feeling under immense pressure for no reason with my heart pounding, to my hair falling out in handfuls and a feeling of depression; as if I have the worlds problems on my shoulders.

I have taken to using iodised salt which is not readily available in the UK and 2 Brazil nuts which apparently have selenium and can help. Not sure if they work in helping my condition but anything is worth a try.
