How long does this have to go on ..... Still waiting and feeling terrible

Here I am again .... still waiting to see consultant and need some advice please.

its been 5 weeks since I had the left hand side of my thyroid removed with a benign lump. Felt pretty rubbish after operation enough to ask to see consultant. He took my blood and replied to me to say that my tsh looked a little high 5.46 (range 0.27 to 4.2) and level t4 was normal 16.2. He says that it may be that I am developing an underactive thyroid but he wants me to wait another 6 weeks before he does bloods again in case the thyroid resumes normal activity. He has not discussed any medication with me and I am not on any medication.

I had a week of feeling ok, I did some exercise classes, I was back to a normal routine although with a lot of brain fog, blearry eyes (eyes have got worse so opticians gave me new stronger glasses) and a lot of tiredness.

Then boom .... I must have had a virus but I have been in bed for the last week. I have a nasty cough but I feel that I should be back up on my feet by now, but I am not. Headaches, massive brain fog, dizziness. Yesterday I was able to get up late morning and walked the 10 minutes to collect my kids from school but thats it.

At what point do I say - I need help. I thought I should maybe get a home blood test kit and take the results and just go and see my Dr. I dont think I can handle another 4 weeks of this!!

Does anyone have any advice?

Yes make a fuss - but my advice to avoid being seen as a neurotic woman (aaaagh!!! So annoying that we get seen that way) - go in with the NICE guidelines and state the docshould on your raised tsh + symptoms start you in 50mcg Levo. You have to speak and behave as a scientist to be heard. You will get well on levo hopefully - but it will take months.

Thank you.

In my daydreams i had imaginings of going in with snakes coming out of my head, eyes on stalks and running around ranting and raving but in reality you are right. So thank goodness for this site as before I started reading I had no idea what a TSH was.

But Drs also don't seem to like it when we know too much either - such a fine line to tread. The fact that's it's our bodies that are on the line here! The hardest part I find is getting through the first line of defence: the consultants assistants!!!

Tell them that this is your health & 4 weeks is unreasonable amont of time to wait!

Good luck
