Hi Everyone,

Just a very brief question....

Is it possible for a UK registered GP to write a private prescription for T3. (To have dispensed in Germany), as in legal and ethical.

Thank you for you for any input.

Yes, they can write an NHS or private prescription for 'liothyronine'. Get them to write it for 100 or 200 tablets so that it matches the Thybon pack size.

They can, but most won't agree to prescribing a non-UK licensed medication, that they are not familiar with, as their insurance probably won't cover them

It's best not to ask for a Thybon 20 Henning prescription, instead get a prescription for liothyronine which can be used to obtain Thybon direct from Germany. Liothyronine is in the BNF so there will be no problem prescribing it, provided the doctor is willing to prescribe liothyronine.

Good morning, ever the optimist (initially anyway) assuming the Dr. agrees to write a prescription could you tell me what exactly he needs to put.

Thanks again

To be as certain of success as possible the doctor should write:

1. 'liothyronine 20 mcg' (NOT 'liothyronine sodium' as Thybon is liothyronine hydrochloride, doctors never bother writing the sodium bit anyway).

2. They should also state how many tablets to take each day, the Germany pharmacy may be fussy about this. e.g. 'take two tablets daily'.

3. It would help if they prescribe in multiples of 100 as Thybon comes in 100 tablet boxes.

If your doctor is already prescribing liothyronine for you there shouldn't be a problem as you can point out you will be saving the NHS a lot of money. If you are not on liothyronine at the moment I suspect a GP will not prescribe as they would probably be acting outside their expertise which they shouldn't do (this might be why Slowdragon mentioned their insurance, perhaps I misunderstood Slowdragon's earlier post).
