Private prescriptions.

Hi all

Hope you have all had a nice Christmas.

Does anyone know how a private prescription works please ? I'm hoping to see an Endo privately to get some much needed help, three years down the line on the Levo train and I feel the worst ever, I want to get off ! Does he advise your GP to write one for say T3 ? Or do you have to keep going back to Endo for next prescription, I have money put away for this but wonder how long it will last, and what it will buy me.

Private prescriptions can be written by any doctor. They usually charge you for issuing one. And for every repeat they have to issue.

It depends entirely on the individual doctors concerned how it could be handled.

Once you have that piece of paper in your paw, you then have to find a pharmacy to dispense it. Most would do so, but they will charge. Expect £120 (or more) for 28 tablets of 20 microgram Liothyronine from Mercury Pharma. (Anything else such as USA special imports would cost even more.) Price can vary from one pharmacy to another.

You might by now understand that even if people could get private prescriptions, they often do not. They simply source their own from abroad where the costs are so very much lower.

Hi thanks

I asked for a private script, GP had to ask senior partners, who said no, so I'm off to see and endorse, see where that takes me, cost may well put an end to it. Cheers for advice though xxx

An FT3 test will show whether you have a need of T3 medication.

Are you unable to find an Endo who will order that test for you on the NHS?

I know that I was very fortunate for this to happen as not all Endo's will do so but after I was asked if I would like to try some T3 it was my Endo who wrote a prescription for me to collect from the hospital pharmacy together with a repeat prescription to give to my GP who then continued to prescribe it ........albeit that he made me aware of the cost

( as Rod has said....£120 for 28 tablets. ) however my GP did add thankfully that I could have it.

It's worth a try.

Thanks, for your advice, I said to my GP if I don't ask I won't get, she is very supportive and I couldn't ask for better, so I will chance my arm, see where I get with it, I feel so unwell nowadays, bloods are " normal" that's a laugh, ( only it's not funny). Lol.

There's a New Year coming and hopefully a new start.....let's hope you get all the help you need to put you on the road to good health and a feeling of well being.

Happy New Year.
