Just who is writing the scripts for Holby these days? Utterly unbelievable. Ric Griffin just said "Let's run a B12 and TFT" with respect to a confused older man.

Now just which real-world hospital doctor would say that? :-) :-)

[ Holby is a BBC TV hospital-based soap.

It was going so well:"Your test results show you have hypothyroidism."

Then this:

"A course of drugs will get him well in a week or two."

And:

"Get him written up for levothyroxine."

(If anyone got the dialogue spot on - please let us know!)

Ah but there might be a sequel possible.. did he get Teva?

He hadn't received it, so far as I could see, so "Don't know".

The poor chap had fallen downstairs and that was blamed on the hypothyroidism.

I thought I’d come across most symptoms and signs over the years, but I’ve never seen falling down the stairs listed....

"A course of drugs will get him well in a week or two."

Ooh, I wish, I wish, I wish, I wish!

I don't think we're in Kansas any more.

And furthermore, hypothyroidism was diagnosed and Levothyroxine prescribed, job done!

Yeah as far as I m concerned Holby disappointed me when I caught a snippet many years ago - medic asked for the "chest opening kit" - when they should have asked for a thoracotomy tray...I am a nurse so cant help it..

A friend of mine used to work on the medical bits for Holby City. He was handed scripts with blank bits for where the medical specifics should fit, and he filled them in with stuff that was roughly plausible.

This was quite a junior writing job, and he had qualifications in Ancient History and TV Production - nothing remotely medical, biological, or even science related. I believe he had a doctor he could phone up to ask the odd question.

Certainly not an haematologist!! They are always trying to make me stop injecting B12... they are so ignorant and set in their archaic ways... a total despair....

Yes it is cringe worthy but somewhere out there some will think it's right and that becomes or can become serious. They should get their facts right even if no one understands what it means unless a fellow patient. The frightening thought is they could have asked a medic for advice! Plus I'd have thought that getting advice from a practising endocrinologist would be essential. Many take soaps as gospel and I've heard of many instances where schools use them to discuss issues with pupils and often writers are asked to portray issues that are currently causing problems or fear so irresponsible not to get it right.

I'm not familiar with this episode of Holby City, but I do watch Casualty (it's sister show also set in Holby) and they had a ridiculous encounter with hypothyroidism which many of us picked up some time ago now, so I guess it may the same scriptwriter...🙄 I do wish they'd at least try to do some research before embarking on story lines like this. It's not as if the information isn't out there...😒
