Just got my new private 6 month script for T3 - paid a fortune last time … over £600 -

any safe and cheaper options yet ? And is it still not available on NHS ?

I have a endo who first prescribed it and then gave permission for my GP to issue it privately !!

thanks

What’s he written on the script? There are German pharmacies you can buy from and post the script to them but only if 50 or 100 of 20mcg on script. They are on the treatment pages of thyroid uk. There are also some uk Pharmacies but no idea on costs.

Thybon 200. From Germany. €30.

Prescription needs to read

Liothyronine 20mcg x 100 tablets

(Or multiples of 100)

This enable prescription to be used to order Thybon Henning 20mcg tablets from Germany

31euro plus 8euro p&p

However if an NHS endocrinologist says you have clinical need for T3 you should be prescribed by NHS

Initial 3-6 months via hospital endocrinologist. Assuming this goes well, then cost and continuing care is transferred to GP

wow - thanks so much SlowDragon … I live in Brighton - east sussex . So does my GP have to follow the RMOC guidance do you think - I'm a tad confused !

My endo is an NHS endo but I saw him privately over a year 5 times where he tried me on just levo and things only improved when he introduced 25mcg of T3 ( cytomel).

Brighton CCG currently has a complete ban on any NHS T3

bsuh.nhs.uk/wp-content/uplo...

theyworkforyou.com/wrans/?i...

Currently being challenged as against national guidelines

btf-thyroid.org/images/docu...

Contact Improve Thyroid Treatment campaign on Facebook, they may know more

Or LouiseRoberts might know - at Thyroid UK head office

Write to your MP too

Once this ban is overturned you need to see your endocrinologist via NHS referral, for transfer to NHS ongoing card and prescribing.

as an aside - do we know WHY it is so expensive here … I'm guessing that the German pharmacy are not subsidising us so why cant we buy Thybon or Cytomel cheaper here on private prescription - I find it so baffling !!!

Exploitation of loophole in the law.

There was no mechanism to control price of single license generic medication.

The assumption was competition between brands would keep prices down

Single license generic medications have o competitors

Loophole now closed, but price only dropped slightly. Down from £258 to £204 per pack of 28

Competition & marketing authority are investigating

C&MA successfully took another case to court, but this was overturned on appeal

C&MA given permission to appeal against the appeal in Dec 2018.

Until this case is resolved they can't proceed with other cases

Thousands on here do get Thybon Henning on private prescription direct from Germany because NHS has stopped many patients getting T3

Obviously many can't afford to get private consultation and private prescription.

Is it on an FP10 prescription form? That is the standard NHS green prescription - though there are some variations for a number of reasons (e.g. Welsh ones have GIG and NHS).

If so, it is an NHS prescription. If not, it is a private one. More or less.

My prescription said “Liothyronine 10mg” and that’s it, no problem buying from Bennewitz pharmacy, even though tablets come as 20mg x100 a week ago bought 2 boxes without any problem;)
