Thyroid test results

Hi, please bear with me as I really don't know much about this at the moment!

I've had anxiety/depression issues for 2.5 years now and a lot of other symptoms that I feel could be related to thyroid issues. My mum and aunt both suffer and receive medication.

I've asked numerous times if my thyroid could be a problem and each time I'm told my levels are normal.

I've been looking at the thyroid UK website and the number of results that should be given. I called the Gp for my numbers and was told TSH 1.9 and 3T4 (this wasn't listed on thyroid UK!) 12.

The TSH does seem to be within range but does anyone know if this could be causing any problems? Also should there not have been further results for TT4, FT4 and FT3?

I've arranged for a telephone appointment for Monday so just want to check I have some information and sound like I know what I'm talking about!

I'm just convinced there's something else underlying.

Thanks

3T4? This sounds like a typo, or they didn't speak clearly when you asked for the results. Should it be FT4?

I'm not an expert but several here are. I suggest you describe your main symptoms and also details, with ranges, of all your test results you have, not just thyroid. They have to provide a printout or email if asked, and it's illegal to charge for it (at least in the UK)

Hope things get sorted soon x

Yeah 3T4... I did say what's that is it not FT4 and she said no 3T4! Who knows!

Well I started having panic attacks 2.5 years ago, this was really sever and came out of nowhere. I had been diagnosed with low b12 but I had had lots of injections by then so levels should have been up. I no longer get injections for this as levels are high now apparently.

Other symptoms, can't sleep, got 4 hours last night, so tired all the time, sweat profusely when hot where you can see it pouring off my face, I've gone from 11stone to 14.5 stone in this time also. I get a lot of pain in my thighs when walking, restless legs at night.

I've had CBT til it's coming out my ears for my anxiety but I just can't shake it, I meditate every day and do all the things they say but I just can't shift it.

I could be completely wrong about all this but the fact my mum and aunt have it too and they have also had mental health issues just makes me thibk there has to be something else.

Unless you are on medication that causes weight gain (some for anxiety and depression, as well as steroids, do that), or have been eating more, it does seem likely due to Hypothyroidism. I used to think increased appetite and heat was due to hyperthyroidism but apparently it can happen with hypo as well. I'm hypo but also started eating more just to try and get some extra energy.

Other effects you described are likely hypo symptoms too, as well as depression

Another question, have your mother and aunt been tested/treated for thyroid issues?

was told TSH 1.9 and 3T4 (this wasn't listed on thyroid UK!) 12.

It's definitely Free T4 (FT4) not 3T4.

We need the reference ranges please, we know TSH is in a reasonable place but we need to know where in range the FT4 is. Ranges vary from lab to lab, mine is 7-17, we often see 9-19 and 12-22, so we'll have a better idea of how to comment if we have your range.

Ask for a print out of your results at your surgery's reception desk, make sure the reference range is included, then come back and add them.

FT3 (Free T3) is almost never done at GP level, nor any other thyroid tests such as Thyroid Antibodies.

As there is family history of thyroid problems, for a full picture you need

TSH

FT4

FT3

Thyroid Peroxidase antibodies

Thyroglobulin antibodies

Vit D

B12

Folate

Ferritin

You wont get them all done at your GP but you could try. If not then you might want to do a private home test with Medichecks to include them all

medichecks.com/thyroid-func...

which can be done by fingerprick or you can arrange venous blood draw at extra cost.

Not what you're looking for?
