I used to take St John's Wort but I have been treated with an SSRI for 3 years. I am now coming off this and wondering whether to go back to the STW for a bit of support. I have seen comments that St John's Wort should not be taken with Thyroid medication. However on the Thyroid UK website it mentions that it can and I used to take it. I never took it at the same time and my endo knew I was taking it.
What is the general thinking about taking SJW when you are also treated with Thyroid hormones please?
Saint Johns wort is a blood thinner. When you go in for surgery they always ask if you have been taking it for 2 week prior to surgery. It is also the "feel good" herb. I have never heard it used in conjunction to thyroid therapy. Of course I live in the states.
Interesting post! I read more years ago than I care to remember that SJW must on be taken with thyroid meds. Can't remember when or where now but I do remember walking into H&B one day and being accosted by someone wanting to show me their new toy! Apparently if showed whether preparation X could be taken alongside preparation Y and I was pushed into asking the question! So I said Levo and SJW and within seconds it told me they were perfection safe to be taken together! Having recently been told they weren't my trust in H&B plummeted!
The danger though that many will have been told that then either directly or by a well meaning friend and never seen an update so my message is always do your own research and rechecked periodically. Thinks can change through time.
Thank you for taking the time to comment. As I said in my post I did used to take them both but not at the same time, 10 hours apart. 3 years ago I was put on an SSRI so had to stop the SJW. My thyroid levels went a bit wonky then. I am now coming off the SSRI so I will see how things go.
