I am curious... Anyone else doing Keto and get to a point of "un-hungry," so much so that force-feeding yourself or only something REALLY flavorful (think spicy taco meat, salsa, guacamole, sourcream salad?) will make you eat? I am having this problem right now, and for about the last week. I'm afraid not eating for 10 and 12 hours at a time is counter-productive, but I honestly just forget to eat because I'm never hungry. And although I ate next to nothing all day yesterday, I barely was able to force myself to eat half my dinner. I am quite sure this will make me lose weight, but not in the healthy way I was looking for... Anyone have any tips to help with this? I've been Keto for several months, and occasionally have had these issues for a day or two, but never for this long. Is this normal? I tend to think I am a very good cook, and my husband is very happy with the food I make. LOL.

Did you see The Magic Pill on Netflix or You Tube? It's all about the keto diet. I don't know if your problem is that unhealthy. Much of what I read is the intermittent fasting is actually very good. So much energy is used to metabolize food that the rest from doing that is not that bad.

I did watch it, and am planning to watch it again, eventually. If this was intentional fasting, I guess it would be okay, but every time I've tried to do this on purpose, it doesn't work for me... Hmmm. Maybe THIS is the point where I should try that.

I have been following a Keto way of eating for almost three years. It is quite common for me to not be hungry and in the early days, yes, I almost had to force feed myself. The important issue is that you get the right macro and micro nutrients, not the volume that you eat. If you haven’t already, be sure to use a reliable macro calculator. The group that I follow recommend reaching your protein goal daily, keeping net carbs to about 25 (mostly through healthy vegetables) and ensuring that at least 60% of your calorie intake is healthy fats. This should be achieved even if you do intermittent fasting or only eat two meals a day. It is not difficult to achieve, but there are times when you just won’t feel hungry. At least that is my personal experience.

I am also following the Keto diet and finding it difficult .I had huge amounts of energy and weight loss in the first month and now feel flat and feel as though i am putting on those kg again. I am so confused by this and am feeling really diet. Its been difficult for me as i am Cealiac and cannot avoid rice. I think i need some help to encourage me as i was doing well. have been on it for three months now. Any help would be appreciated as not sure what to eat and cannot be bothered with eating ?

The Keto Diet may not be right for everyone because of bioindividuality. If you feel that you have to eat rice, then you may not find long term success on a Keto diet, as rice is quite high in carbs and will not allow you to eat all the other vegetables that you need for good nutrition. In the group that I belong to there are celiacs who are having great success, but they are totally grain free. If you do not all ready belong to a Keto group forum, you might try finding a credible group and seeking help from them. I am not sure if you are on this page because you also have thyroid issues....if you do, you may find this blog helpful, as the founder has Hashimotos:

ketodietapp.com/Blog. Hope that helps.

Why can't you avoid rice? I have never been tested for Celiac, but know that I feel better and skin is clear without it. To do keto, you really must avoid ALL grains, however, every now and then, I use a bit of sprouted wild rice in a soup, even on Keto, and it doesn't hurt. I am just confused as to why you CAN'T avoid...?

You will need to do a bit of research or join some groups (a bunch on FB) and get recipes and ideas. I cook everything just from my single ingredients and make "whatever" with them---no real name for anything. It truly is, in my opinion, all about the ingredients.

Have you looked at the recipes on the DietDoctor website? None of them include rice, and all the recipes are gluten-free.

Than you, will do this now. I cannot find food that i can eat, ( I have a lot of food sensitivities ) that doesn't include rice as the base, like for lunch my base is Rice Crackers which i eat with protein food like chicken or Avocado . Think i need a dietician to help me out. Going to look at that site now. Thank you. Yes, i do have a thyroid prob, i am underactive, but also have been diagnosed with Adrenal Exhaustion and Fibromyalgia, this is why i am trying the Keto Zone diet. I have improved i must say, my pain has lessened as has the Chronic Exhaustion. Thank you to all that has answered me on this Forum. x

I have food sensitivities as well and doing Keto. I am gluten, grains and dairy free. Personally one easy substitution is take bread out and put lettuce or other veggies in.

For breakfast I have bacon and eggs over arugula or spinach. Instead of noodles I use zucchini.

There are tons of awesome recipes on line. Happy hunting!

I am kind of a "food chemist" and don't exactly follow the macros to a tee... I guess what I mean is, I know all the counts for everything I cook, usually before I buy, but def by the time I cook it, and portion accordingly---no macros calculator, it's just all in my head. That's one of my new-found (since getting my meds optimized) strengths that I haven't had in 20 years; being able to keep things straight and all in my mind. I eat right and great, every time I eat... however, the NOT eating is why it's a problem. My husband is losing, and eating everything I give him---he has lost 20+pounds in less than 3 months (he joined me a bit later, after he saw what I was eating, hehehehe). So it sounds like the times I am just not hungry, I should run with it? And not be upset by it?

I think it's wonderful that you have been able to accomplish all that and stuck to it. John Bergman always says your body is extremely intelligent (haha even if we aren't) and I wonder if you are at your ideal weight. Maybe that's why it turns off the appetite in an attempt to reach it. That's just a thought but still, unless there is another underlying reason,,,,,,,,

Hellonwheels profile image
Hellonwheels in reply to Heloise

Who knows, but I hope this isn't my ideal weight. LOL. Another 20 pounds, and I would be the size 6 that I was before my thyroid tanked... might be asking a lot, though.

I have the same experience as you Hellonwheels- no appetite & unintentional weight loss. I'm not on a strict keto diet but limiting carbs and increasing healthy fats and vegetables and lean protein. Primarily to prevent diabetes and also as I have suspected lymes disease and high thyroid antibodies and low T3. So I thought it would be helpful to reduce carbs & gluten. But I am already lowish weight so don't want to lose weight but it is a byproduct of keto. I've been following this for about 3 weeks and am not losing more weight but equally I'm not able to put weight on so it's not ideal (for me) & I have very little appetite.

Not sure this helps you but sharing my experiences.

Good luck.

If you like the way you feel, keep doing it. I'll give you some suggestions, if that's okay... quit worrying about how lean your meat is if low-carb enough. This will help you maintain the weight, as it adds extra calories (and usually tastes yummier). Eat more avocado, ADD EVOO or other healthy oil to your food after it's cooked, Use "bulletproof coffee" (I suggest you look up a recipe that is good for YOU, versus buying it---really expensive, otherwise. I use 2TBS coconut oil, 2TBS butter/ghee, 2packets stevia, 2TBS heavy cream, 20 ounces strong coffee for mine) in place of regular coffee to up your calories/fat intake---again, if you are following low-carb. Even with these dietary changes for me, though, I am concerned about my lack of hunger. LOL, mainly because I just don't want to turn around and gain it back!

What is Evoo?

Hellonwheels profile image
Hellonwheels in reply to humanbean

Extra virgin olive oil. Sorry :-/ Common in the States, guessing not, where you are?

humanbean profile image
humanbean in reply to Hellonwheels

Extra virgin olive oil is common in the UK. It's the abbreviation to Evoo which isn't common. :)

Hellonwheels in reply to humanbean

HAHAHA! That's what I meant---the abbreviation. :-D

Polly91 in reply to Hellonwheels

Thanks! I'm not crazy about the way I look as I look gaunt. I do add evoo (new acronym for me!) to quite a lot of food. Unfortunately I don't drink coffee. I've always been a bit concerned about eating the wrong fats as I've got highish cholesterol (6.2 mmol/l or 239.75 mg/dl but good cholesterol is good from what I remember ) but both parents with heart disease.

Thanks vm

If you drink black tea, the same can be done... the theory with this way of life is that if in ketosis, your cholesterol will actually reduce, even if you DO eat some dark poultry or a ribeye sometimes. My cholesterol was around 40 points high last year, and now it's only a slightly high NORMAL for my age...

Why would lemon rinds help you gain weight? But that is in a recipe for gaining weight. You run the whole lemon through the juicer. There may be more to this but I can't recall. I unfortunately don't have that problem. Can you have lemons on keto?

Hellonwheels profile image
Hellonwheels in reply to Heloise

Lemon rinds?? I must have missed something about that helping you gain weight. LOL, I thought would be better for losing, or hydrating/but helping water retention... Some lemon is fine on Keto. I use them for fish and seafood, some marinades for other meats, and for an occasional alcoholic beverage. I typically use more lime than lemon, though, as I hate dealing with seeds. Lemon and lime juices are great in place of vinegar for salad dressing, salsa, and really most places vinegar is used. There's [negligible] amount of carb(s) in these juices, but used in moderation, it's kind of like artificial sweetener in how you count the carbs... I would say juice of 1/6 lime or lemon is about 1 carb---and that's a JUICY piece. I never measure, and it never hurts anything.

True... I should say, my HDL is now high NORMAL, when it had been 40 points high. My triglycerides have always been low-normal...

Hellonwheels profile image

Hasn't been tested, from anything I have seen...? I don't exhibit any signs of diabetes, so I am not sure why it would be? Is that something that is tested regularly across the pond?

Hellonwheels profile image
Hellonwheels in reply to Hellonwheels

And my bad... LDL was 40 points lower. HDL was lower, too, but only a little. Don't remember exact numbers, and don't have them handy, but remember being shocked at 40 points.

That makes sense for some, but I have only one (overweight, and only in most recent 2-3 years) of the risk factors, so I guess I understand why my doctor didn't test for it yet. I'm guessing next physical she might, though, as I will be officially over 45, also. Hopefullly no longer overweight, though :-)

I sometimes have days like this, just cannot be bothered preparing food at all. I'm not full keto though, but paleo, and I think it's got a lot in common with keto.

It's gotten better since I started going to the gym more, lifting heavier weights (not much cardio)

Punky12 profile image

I was doing paleo I long time before Keto and agree with you! They are a lot a like. I have Hashimoto’s and don’t eat grains or dairy. So both these options go well with this.

My next physical IS when I see her next---I am still not understanding why this is such a big deal? Could you explain?

I only eat between 12-30 and 8-30 . So the rest is fasting or body rest time . I normally try do some sort of exercise between getting up and 12-30 so I’m ready by 12-30 for a lovely salad and cheese or bone broth . Then cook an evening meal for partner so alwY do something for me as well and easy to eat that way . But it not my focuse any more very strange because preparing for keto meals is so much easer I find . And it doesn’t mater if your not eating a big meal I some time just have coconut flower pancake with cream and blueberry and don’t feel any guilt
