Blood tests on participants show profound impact work pattern has on hormones

Working night shifts can mess up the body’s natural rhythms so much that the brain and digestive system end up completely out of kilter with one another, scientists say.

Three night shifts in a row had little impact on the body’s master clock in the brain, researchers found, but it played havoc with gut function, throwing the natural cycle out by a full 12 hours.

There's a lot of information available with regard to leptin & ghrelin, & the latter increasing with insufficient, lower quality or disturbed sleep, though I don't recall ever reading anything that links those to thyroid hormones. There must be some effect as the endocrine system is closed.

I worked 6-2 and 2-10 alternate weeks at a food processing factory when I was a student. My guts were majorly screwed up for about 6 months after. Never did shifts again, but new motherhood was trying!
