Hypothroididm/ Hashimotos and bone loss

Hi. I’m a newbie to this forum but reading your posts has really helped me manage/understand my Hypothyroidim/Hashimotos. Need some advice! I visited the dentist yesterday who told me my XRays taken approx 3 months ago showed significant bone loss in my jaw. She was perplexed as my gums are very healthy and show no signs of disease. I have read that Levothyroxine can cause bone loss over time. I was diagnosed 9 months ago and take 125mcg Levothyroxine daily. Can anyone advise me. Many thanks.

Make sure you have sufficient magnesium & boron, & vitamin D & K2 for good bone health. These minerals & vitamins help divert calcium to our bones rather than our arteries. Also, avoid caffeine which reduces calcium absorption.

I would request a blood test for Free T4 and Free T3 to make sure both are near the top of the range. If doctor or lab wont do them, you can get aprivate one from a

private lab which will do so. This is a link:-

We have two labs - Blue Horizon and Medichecks and medichecks have a special offer every Thursday.

Levothyroxine is T4 alone. T4 is inactive and has to convert to T3. A Free T4 and Free T3 is very useful but rarely tested. Read on the following why these two tests are valuable.

All vitamins and minerals have to be optimum too and many of us supplement.

Thank you, Shaws. I doubt my GP will agree to the tests - they seem to fixate on TSH levels and nothing else! I will definitely look into getting a private test at the labs you suggested.

If you do, make sure you are well-hydrated a couple of days before blood draw and also allow approx 24 hour gap between last dose of levo and the test and take afterwards.

Thanks for your advice, BadHare. I’m going to have a blood test done to check my levels.
