I have an elderly freind who went for blood tests about 8 months ago. I instructed her toget her blood results which she did but the print out that she was given just named the blood test followed by the word normal. No ranges or numbers just said B12 normal, tsh normal. I get the impression that this is the print out the doctors are also given at this surgery.heaven forbid this spreads. She hasgonedown hillsince becomming very tired, consitpated, hairloss and fluid retention. She has just had her blood again and was given the result as normal. This is crazy as all sorts of uncommon deseases have conventioanlly normal blood results. My child has normal blood results and itis only in the eyes of an expert that the relevent makers can be identifiyed. Uncommon health conditions are very common. Most familys I would imagine have a rarecondition or 2 that would look normal to an unspecialist eye. How daft of the GPs to accept this rubbish and howcan my freind get proper blood results so she can post here toget some good advice to make decsions about her health.
Is this legal and how can we get real results? - Thyroid UK

Where does she get her blood work drawn? If the place is connected with a lab, her lab should be able to help furnish you with their normal values. If the lab sends the work out they could tell you where it is sent out to. Hopefully you could call there to obtain normal values. The lab where the blood was drawn should have a onsite supervisor you can ask for advice if necessary. I find it difficult to believe her physician does not receive these values. I think she just received a dumb downed patient copy.
I would hope this is dumbed down but not sure having seen the last one.She had blood takne in GPs surgery. I dont think patients have access to any of the lab staff in uk unless paying privately.
If your in the uk. She entitled to a copy of her blood work. Next time she at the doctors. Asked her to asked them to see her results. And see what they say.xx
yes I willpush this but she did this last time and was just given crud printout and told that they were her results. She is a bit timid. I just thought what new hell is this when I saw theprint out she produced I have not come it across on this forum before when people ask for a print outof results they usually get the numbers.
The labs will always send the actual results and ranges to the doctors. The doctors will then make notes as to whether the result is normal and in range or abnormal and patient needs to be seen.
That is usual practice but this is not doctors notes to say normal it is a lab printout she has been given.
That’s unusual so I would go back to your doctor and question what you’ve been given
You can also put her on the net. Every doctor surgery in are area has the system online. All it needs is name and date birth and request a password and when she get your password you can change to what ever you like. And when you have it all. You can request to see notes as well. So you can see it all online. As much as they will show you. You can order repeats medication, try and get appointment with any doctor in her surgery. But she can still phone and try and get appointment as well.
Sadly not everywhere in UK
Your joking. I thought it was every where
I'm in Wales. Wish I could send you a picture of the GP's face - when I dared to ask!
If she is able to attend the surgery, you or someone should go along with her and insist to have a copy of her lab results that was sent by the lab. I believe they are not acting legally if your friend has requested the results. If they ask why she wants them just reply that she has a right to have them. (Unless of course they deem her to have a mental capacity concern that may cause her to harm herself if she saw her results; unlikely.)
Maybe put it in writing. If her tests were taken less than 40 days ago, they cannot use the fee excuse under the respective Act; which is what they might do to put you off making the request.
Once you get the results you will need to get them interpreted; not sure if her GP practice will be the best to do this given their current stance.
Good luck. (Actually it is not about luck, this is your friend’s right)
Ps: Is she on many medications. It would be good to look into this and ask for a review as her medication could be affecting her and the surgery may be covering this up and just be treating her as a ‘cash cow’ Elderly (No disrespect to your friend, but I would not be surprised if they look at the revenue generated from the elderly.) My mother’s former GP, in her surgery, who looks after the elderly had not shown any interest in reviewing my mums medication and when I questioned her, in front of my mother, about a review, she said that I would have to get a Power of Attorney. Cheek of it.
Yes get them print outs- disgusting thst they just have normal on them, i would not accept that!! Once results are given post them on this site-then i would go back to gp backed up with more knowledge of levels and symptons- i would not expect the medical profession to understand the results as they know jot about the thyroid!! I really do hope you get it sorted please dont be fobbed off by the incompetant medical proffession.xx🌟🌟
Your friend is lucky having you looking out for her, next time she goes and asks for her results as suggested somebody should go with her and when she receives her copy ask the receptionist why the printout does not include everything. Last time I rang and asked for a copy it was waiting in a envelope at the front desk about 20 minutes later. It included all the reference ranges.
I can't remember the circumstances now, it was such a long time ago, but I've been given results that just said "Normal, Normal, Normal" against every test. At the time I remember my jaw dropped. I was absolutely gob-smacked! I thought it couldn't be right but was unaware of my legal rights at the time.
I actually wonder if there is an option programmed into the medical software that can be used to print out one of these nonsense bits of paper.
