Hi and Welcome !

You really need more testing done - FT4 - FT3 and Thyroid Anti-bodies TPO & Tg to rule out Hashimotos. Also you have not posted the range for the TSH - which is too high for a healthy person. The figures in brackets after the result.

Also you will need test results for B12 - Folate - Ferritin - VitD as they could well be low with Thyroid issues.

Symptoms ? - other medications and conditions ?

Marz has given good advice.

If you are in the UK, the advice to doctors is to wait until the TSH reaches 10. In other countries diagnosis is made when it is 3+.

I shall give you a list of clinical symptoms and any tests for thyroid hormones has to be at the very earliest possible, the reason being that the TSH is highest early a.m. and drops throughout the day and could mean being diagnosed or not.

Some doctors may prescribe if TSH goes above the top of the range which is about 5. Ranges are in brackets after results and they are important to quote if you post your results.

If you have thyroid antibodies in your blood the GP should prescribe regardless of the results but many do not but one doctor believes if we have antibodies we should be prescribed. We can provide a copy of his article if your GP is reluctant to prescribe if TSH hasn't reached the number for diagnosis.

Riggs79,

What is the lab ref range (the figures in brackets after the results)? NHS won't usually diagnose hypothyroidism until TSH is over range.

Hi

I believe the cut off point is 4.5 so I'm just over on the first test as it was 4.54 but this time 4.8 , these are just results I've been given over the phone from the doctors surgery and not actually seen a doctor in person.

Riggs79,

As the second result is over range and higher, if you are symptomatic you should make an appointment to see your GP and request Levothyroxine. If you are not symptomatic you could wait until TSH is >10.
