Vitamin D3 Supplement Issue

I was told by my doctor to supplement D3 (5,000 IU), but when I do, my body starts feeling so weak, like I have no energy. It even happens on smaller doses too. I’ve tried several different brands, but all give me the same feeling. Any suggestions?

Shaun_m,

Have you tried a spray?

I haven’t. I did try a liquid form, a brand called Solgar, but it caused the same issue.

You may be like some of us who cannot tolerate vitd supplements in any form, I have to make do with the sun when it appears.

I don't know why you can't tolerate vitamin D, but I know that you aren't alone.

If you google "why can't I tolerate vitamin D" you'll find a lot of links on the subject.

I went to the Vitamin D Council website :

vitamindcouncil.org/

and searched for the word "tolerate" and found a few references to not being able to tolerate vitamin D, so it might be of help.

Or your thyroid may be very under treated

TSH should be around or just under one for most patients

Try the vitamin D mouth spray by Better You. It avoids poor gut function

Supplementing vitamin D can exacerbate low magnesium too.

Perhaps try that for few days first. (I had to do that. Couldn't tolerate any vitamin D supplements at first)

Do you have Hashimoto's also called autoimmune thyroid disease, diagnosed by high thyroid antibodies?

I have hypothyroidism and Graves’ disease. I appreciate the input.

Shaun,

You may be deficient in magnesium. Add some good magnesium to your daily supplementation and only then you'll be able to tolerate Vitamin D.

Magnesium is 'Required' to convert Vitamin D into its active form in the blood. If you have low magnesium, you'll feel those side effects.

This link may help explain it.

Also, Vitamin D is fat soluble; so, best taken with your main meal and not on an empty stomach.

I hope this helps!

Thank you for the input. I’ll be looking into a Magnesium supplement.
