Red eyes

Hello, I have really bad red eyes, and watery, it goes for a while, then it comes back worse, I have graves disease, and my doctor has just informed me ,to come down from 150 thryoxine to 125 a day, as I am overactive again! 12 years ago I had the iodine treatment, so I thought I no longer had a working thyroid, and have been on 150 thyroxine for many years, are my eyes connected to this? Can anyone tell me please, I am 63 and still working,

Dose should not be adjusted just on TSH

For full evaluation you ideally need TSH, FT4, FT3, TT4, TPO and TG antibodies, plus vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 tested

See if you can get full thyroid and vitamin testing from GP. Unlikely to get FT3

Private tests are available and hundreds on here use them as NHS refuses to test FT3

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have money off offers.

All thyroid tests should be done as early as possible in morning and fasting and don't take Levo in the 24 hours prior to test, delay and take straight after. This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results

You might try giving up on all gluten/grains and processed foods.

Jennychandler55,

You can't be overactive if you have no thyroid. Your doctor should have said s/he thinks you are overmedicated and that is why your dose has been reduced. If you post your recent thyroid results and ranges we can tell you whether you were overmedicated.

See an optician for an eye check. Tell optician you have Graves as you need to know whether the redness indicates thyroid eye disease (TED) developing.

I have dry eyes caused by my Graves, ophthalmologist recommended eye drops at night to rehydrate them as it was also affecting my eye sight, they have helped a lot and my eyes don’t run and get sticky as often.

I would recommend checking on your eyes because thyroid will make your eyes dried specially after taking the iodine treatment.
