I think my mum may need a bit of help. She has never had her blood test results just told she's fine but she's feeling rubbish and now has an abscess that won't go away. I think she'd benefit from finding stuff out including private blood tests in Ireland.

The forum is for anyone, wherever they live, we have members from all over the world :)

Do you think your mum has a thyroid problem? Get her to ask at her surgery for a print out of her results and post them, with reference ranges, and members will comment.

I don't know about getting private blood tests in ROI, you could contact Medichecks and Blue Horizon and see if they can help.

She was diagnosed 20 years ago and is on 125mcg of Levo but doesn't know her results and says they don't test for vitamins over there

Get her to ask the surgery for a print out of her results/reference ranges. She can get vitamins and minerals tested with Blue Horizon or Medichecks, but you'll need to check with them if they cover ROI. You can ring, or Blue Horizon has a Chat facility on their website.

Your Mother should always get blood tests for thyroid hormones at the very earliest as that's when the TSH at its highest (TSH drops throughout the day). It should also be a fasting test (she can drink water) and allow a gap of 24 hours between her last dose of levothyroxine and the test and take it afterwards.

This procedure give us the best outcome as doctors know little and only look at the TSH.

Your mother should ask for TSH, T4, T3, Free T4, Free T3 and thyroid antibodies. (antibodies would confirm she has an Autoimmune Thyroid Disease but treatment is the same).Antibodies can be reduced by going gluten-free.

Also ask for B12, Vit D, iron, ferritin and folate at the same time as thyroid hormones. Get a print-out with the ranges. Ranges are important to respond as labs differ.

Post on a new question the results and ranges. I shall give you a list of clinical symptoms and if we are on the right dose and/or hormones we should have none.
