Links with Thyroid function and diet? What are your thoughts & experiences with allergy testing?

Just a thought but I’ve spent the last two years since diagnosis of hashimotos trying to get better and yet still struggling.

I’ve looked at my diet and even eating clean, cutting out gluten & grains I’m still exhausted and feeling ill. With this in mind and now not under endocrinology due to self medicating I’m looking for answers. So found this discounted test on wowcher.com testing for 750 food, environmental, metals, everyday chemicals, stress and hormone factors.

It was just £34 discounted from £89 and included in the test is TSH FT3 and FT4. I think what I’m eating is a huge factor in why I’m so sick and not improving.

I’m interested in anyone’s thoughts on allergies and intolerances affecting their health and any positive experiences? I read this a while ago....

“This is particularly true of the gut and its impact on immune health. Your gut health and immune system are inextricably linked. Did you know that approximately seventy to eighty percent of your immune tissue is located within your digestive system?”

If I’m eating foods that I’m intolerant too (some I am aware of from a test I had a number of years ago ie eggs alcohol msg food colouring etc) maybe I have more that I’m not aware of!

Hi, are you on Instagram? If so, find me Pepe_le_pew. I found my answers via probiotics and food changes. I can go into more detail in a PM.

Basically I had been undiagnosed and untreated for so long that my whole body needed a shake up. Bit like an old car that needs systematic run throughs before it goes out on the road!

I took a probiotic which I researched for months about beforehand so I spent on something that was right and would work, then I changed my diet.

I now have limited joint pain intermittently, my muscle aches are not as frequent or intense, I have lost all bloating and all signs of inflammation under arms, in neck and groin and I have lost 1 stone easily since end Nov. Previously I'd been unwell from Oct 2014 and nothing was working to make me feel even 10% better consistently.

Everyone's different, so my story may not help your story, but I'm happy to share it in a PM just in case it does. It's easier to get me on Insta only as I'm not on here often.

K xx

Thanks K I’d appreciate that!

Weight hasn’t really been an issue until recently where I’m losing so much I’m beginning to get worried as I’m nearly 9 stone and a size 8 and still losing. I’ve no appetite and scared to eat anything as everything I eat affects me and makes me ill.

I’ve just noticed that when I don’t eat my stomach is calmer. But obviously my fatigue and tremors are worse when I don’t eat. I’m just at a loss what I can do as even on a strict diet I’m unwell.

I know nothing about probiotics but you’d definitely be able to help me. I’ve been told that when diagnosed I was very sick and my body needs time to recover. But it’s now 2 years and although it’s slow progress on medication - I’m on T3 only surely I’d see some improvements by now.

The hospital are investigating other autoimmune diseases but the root cause I believe is my stomach and what I’m eating! X

I did an assessment on Celiac's UK that said people with autoimmune thyroid disease should be tested for Celiac's disease

I’ve been tested but not celiac however I know I’m intolerant which can be just as bad.

Hope you find the cause. Terribly frustrating. Giving up gluten & grains is a good move. Make sure you're getting enough fiber. Fiber's a prebiotic that feeds gut flora. Probiotics often help a lot. Start with a low dose & slowly increase. Gluten can also be in lipstick, lotions & other personal care products so only use things listed as gluten free.

I’ve ordered some probiotics thank you. Funny I think products have been discussed before and many say that unless it’s digested products containing gluten such as shampoo etc can’t effect you. Wonder if there’s any new evidence out on this?

My partner has coeliac disease, and so we avoid any products with gluten in them (shampoo too). Running your fingers through your hair gets it onto your hands, then it can get onto the food as you prepare it. The quantities will be minuscule, but we just prefer not to take the chance.

Hope probiotics help. My GP has celiac disease & said that topical gluten should also be avoided. Good question if there's research on this.

Don’t you always find doctors who suffer themselves are so much more understanding!

Yes. Too bad that can't be a requirement:)

Are you at risk of cross-contamination? I.e. sharing toasters, foods cooked in the same oil as gluten containing foods? You could be particularly sensitive.

Have a look at the auto-immune paleo diet, you could try that for a bit (1-3 months) then reintroduce foods slowly to see if you get a reaction.

Work on healing your gut while following the diet too.

Thanks I’m on the auto immune paleo diet. But I think my stomach is so still so sensitive.

I don’t use the toaster at all so avoid cross contamination. Tbh Ive literally tried everything to help. I do think I’m over medicated so reducing my dose and maybe eating foods I’m intolerant to is therefore preventing my gut from healing. So I hope this test will help.

It's worth a shot, I've heard mixed response from people who have done these sorts of tests - one found it basically just listed everything she'd eaten in the last fortnight. It would give you an idea where to start.

If you like, my nutritionist runs a Facebook group with tips on getting good gut function - I can PM you the name of you'd like to join?

I had a test done years ago with a copper conductor on each hand sounds bizarre. However eggs came up that I hadn’t eaten since childhood as they made me so sick. Others such as low B vitamins msg food colouring etc also showed up. Rest I was fine .

It’ll be really interesting if the items I know I have issues with including eggs and thyroid hormones show up. I’ll come back and let you know. But I understand hair strands can show a clear picture over so many months unlike a blood test which is the here and now.

Yes pls I have a dummy account for pages like that. I find fb very negative so came off but there’s also a lot of beneficial info and support groups too that can help so I’d be very interested. Thank you
