Thick toe nails - fungus?

foxyfouro profile image
13 Replies

Toenails. I have thick big toe and pinky toe nails. Under one big toe is a white lump in the middle of the nail under the nail. I do not think it is a fungus. I used tea tree oil and oregano oils for months - and they are anti-fungal. I just want this "bump" to grow out smooth again. I cut my toenail way back down, but I am afraid I will harm the nail by cutting it down so far and filing. Any help or suggestions? It has never been green or yellowish, but the nail has been soft there where the injury is.

about 3 years.

Pediatrist I saw suggested it might be candida can be in gut due to low stomach acid and gets in nails too.

Yet another thing that cleared up with addition of T3

so Might be due to low FT3

Candida might be. I was strict paleo for a year. No sugar alcohol or grain. It did not improve. But I know Candida is hard to control. How do I add T3? I am new to this site.

Pediatrist suggested filing surface of nail to keep it thinner and to help get cantesten cream in

Treat with canesten minimum once week.

T3 - do you have latest thyroid test results and ranges

TSH, FT4 and FT3

Plus do you have high thyroid antibodies? This is Hashimoto's also called autoimmune thyroid disease.

Best to test vitamin D, folate, B12.and ferritin, especially with Hashimoto's

Post results if you have them

For full evaluation you ideally need TSH, FT4, FT3, TT4, TPO and TG antibodies, plus vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 tested

See if you can get full thyroid and vitamin testing from GP. Unlikely to get FT3

Private tests are available

thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/testin...

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have money off offers.

All thyroid tests should be done as early as possible in morning and fasting and don't take Levo in the 24 hours prior to test, delay and take straight after. This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results

It was the pediatrist, who recognised is was probably candida

Almost completely cleared up after 5 years of problems, after just 9 months on T3/T4

Two of mine grow like sausages with soft whitish stuff making up the sausage bit attached to the nail I guess they are the index toes if there is such a thing the ones next to big toe . I wonder if it is the same thing. There has been big nail discussion today on the nail moon post but this one has not come up. I was told it could be fungal but doc was not interested and would not refer me to chiropodist who would know for sure

He should try cutting them and tolerating the pain from rubbing on my shoes he’d leg it to a chiropodist fast!

Hi foxyfouro, I agree w slowdragon & if I may add. Early in my illness I had no outward visible signs of camdida overgrowth but had "abnormal epithelial cells" on a PAP exam & not wanting standard treatment of cutting part of cervix ( Im sorry TMI, I know ) I came across that many times its candida . Knowing me & my horrid standard American diet & 1-2 L of coca cola a day , til that point I insisted to get diflucan pills ( 2 doses in 6 days ) and to get retested . Not only did I have a normal result, I felt like a light switch went on & the world was clear - no mote brain fog !! I was on to something about the power of food ( plus what bad food does to you) Point is, natural candida treatment is best but it TAKES ALOT of time & special naturpathic doctors I couldnt afford. Yes, I know , but 2 times in 2 years then a start of levo & gluten & dairy free & my PAP test are A-OK!! Best!🤗🌸

Hi

I really sympathise with you. I tried everything including oregano oil. My toe and skin ( around the toe) were v sore and I had a lump and a section of the nail was more yellow.

So I had a stool anyalsis test. It’s nothing to do with low stomach acid. Low probiotics and high bacteria are to blame. I tried pau Darco and uva ursi both helped but it did not go completely. My specialist ( endo is fab) gave me some anti fungal meds for a few weeks and it helped 80%. Now I continue with the uva ursi and probiotics. Hopefully it will all grow out.

My diet was gluten free anyway but now I don’t eat fruits. It can take ages to go( mushrooms are a no no too)

Dr axe and Mercola have good articles on it.

Good luck

Just to say that I have this problem, and did not experience any improvement even though my T3 was off the top of the scale for a couple of months.

My partner has had horrid, thick, yellow toe nail fungus for about 10 years. Since drinking my water based Coconut Kefir his toe nails are growing through beautifully pink. He is delighted and amazed. Proof is in the pudding. He now has proof that the time and effort I take to brew the Kefir is worth it! He now is a believer!

I am Hashimoto's and I had toe nail fungus for over 23 years, no manner of medication, or anti fungal toe nail varnish did anything. Eventually I asked my GP for a lengthy Flucanazole treatment, daily tablet for either two or three months, I can't remember now, but it did the trick. At that time I knew nothing about kefir, wish I had.

Try lots of probiotics, plenty of Kefir, pickled vegetables and bone broth?

I am going to start pickling vegetables myself to also, to add to my kefir regimen, in order to create Probiotic variation.
