Heat Intolerance and Thyroid

I have found my inner thermostat doesn't work well since being hypothyroid-standing in bank today I had my feather puffa jacket on with warm scarf and within 5 mins felt really light headed and had a strong heartbeat-loosened off the clothing and felt a bit better but thought I was going to faint! Does anyone else have similar experiences?

Hi celticlady I am the same (though I’m hyper) in the morning I get way too hot especially the first half hour at work I get scared I’m going to pass out in our morning meeting but then as the afternoon comes I am freezing cold like the coldness goes right through me my feet and hands are the worst!!

Thanks Lisa-It feels like a panic attack is starting so I panic even more-not a nice feeling and it has actually made me think twice about various outings-theatres/hot cafes/restaurants so has affected my social life as well! Somebody recommended smelling salts? Take Care..

It is like I guess a panic attack but well done u for staying in the bank and not getting the better of u.

Your not alone I am exactly the same I remember walking through boots one day and I got really hot then my heart started pounding I thought I was going to pass out or be sick but I made myself stay there I was using breathing technics from my meditation apps and it passed I then made myself go to another shop until I felt ok and then I went home.

This may sound silly but I also use something to distract me when I feel like this like eating a mint or I have tiger balm pot to smell (probably sound like a strange person ha)

The other thing is that it may of been because you were dressed for the cold and then gone into the bank where the staff probably have the heaters on full blast and it may of been a natural reaction.

Have you been hypo long?....I’m always 2nd thinking my social life and where I’m going I don’t really enjoy eating out now and I used to be such a foodie ....but the panic does subside I can do so much more now.

The temperature control thing hasn’t quite sorted itself out I always used to be too hot all the time but I now have the hot feeling in the morning then in the afternoon I’m freezing cold weirdly!! Ha

Hi Lisa been hypo for 7 years only on 50 mcg Levo actavis and all bloods come back ok. I'm currently snipping bits off my tablet to see if the jitters will decrease as the light headed panicky thing is really annoying me now. I'm 61 so age will factor in somewhere maybe also was on 75mcg in first year and had shocking panic attacks hypoglycaemia etc so I will never take a stronger dose- would rather be under than over-feeling flat and uninspired is preferential to being manic !! So not just heat probs but also anxiety stuff which is exacerbated by the heat intolerance symptoms........take care and thank you for sharing your experiences I wish there was a support group in Leeds - talking to other thyroiders is so therapeutic!!

Hi

I also get over heated.

You are right in saying our thermostats don't work when hypo.

Lots of people feel cold but others get overheated. I also feel panicky when it comes on. It is an awful feeling and like you I sometimes avoid certain places.

What are thyroid levels like?

Hi there my TSH is 1.1 at last bloods results- all ok really and taking all the nrecommended supplementation I'm only on 50 mcg Lego per day so quite happy to not go up to 75 as last time I had shocking panic attacks and came down to 50 with similar blood results when on the higher dose. Now I cut a bit off my tablets so my system is getting a lower dose and the jitters have decreased but the problem is so complex re thyroxine/TSH/T3 etc not sure how this will play out......

Yes it is so complex, I get similar symptoms when under and over medicated so it is very difficult to get meds. just right.

Hope you find the dose that suits you soon.

Best wishes.

Gosh yes! You want to hear husband about me and my body thermostat!

I have none. I’m either way too hot or absolutely freezing cold. I have no happy medium. It is a total pain to be honest and apart from always wearing layers and carrying a bottle of water with me.

I’m in remission with Graves but I feel the cold too and always have done. I can’t stand my other half’s car (Peugeot 207 or something like that) because no matter what I do the ventilation system is never right for me.

I’ve been like this all of my life - thyroid problems in waiting? I remember as a child I used to sunbathe wrapped in a blanket with only my face sticking out and I’m still the same. You’ve got my sympathy 😉

I hear you! When I go out I have to think very carefully about where I'll be and what clothes I need to wear and take with me. It's even more difficult when I know I'll be on a long drive from my cold home in the high Pennines into a city, where hospitals and shops are nearly always over-heated.

Gosh, just before Christmas when it was a bit snowy I went into a local card shop and as she was serving me the assistant asked if I was from ‘up in the villages’. I said no I lived in town and asked why she asked. Turned out it was because I was all wrapped up! LOL

I'm in on the overheating/freeze club. I have a mini fan on my desk at work as I frequently break out in a heatwave, especially if I eat anything at all. Also have a bigger fan under my deck to one side. I create my own wind turbulence in the corner of the room. Wonderful. I can do my own blowy hair advert when I'm particularly bored. Nut sure my colleagues appreciate that realty but.....but....as the advert says....I'm worth it!

Cough, very sorry, can't help my humour....oh wait! Did I say humour!....hurrr hurrr....wishing you all well.

I have improved this symptom a lot since I started T 3.

Like others just melted several times a day , pounding heart etc it felt awful. I used to imagine I was lying in snow to help at these times .

But as I said much better since T3 Also helping with other pains

Pain getting it though 😫😫

This heat is killing me, I do believe that is a symptom with thyroid disease. I did get two of those little cold air boxes from JML and sitting right next to it. It does seem like I am a,ways hotter then everyone else and when summer comes I wish I was in Alaska. I am on Thryoid-s and it has controlled my symptoms so far. But this summer in the UK in an upstairs flat feels like my skin is burning. Luckily today it has cooled down just a bit and my little cool air boxes arrived just in time. Yes my tolerance to heat is bad, but cold, I am good. I feel for you honey.

Does your skin get like dried out or a sensation of being burnt from the inside?

Also I felt like I had heat exhaustion, to try to get ready to go anywhere, I am lucky I work from home, Celticlady I am feeling just like you. I am meant to be going out tonight, thankfully the weather broke just enough and those air boxes they advertise. Short distance but at least you can be cool to get ready, I also eat pepper mints, and put peppermint oil in my diffuser. Don't feel alone, while everyone is wearing regular clothes, I have to think about my outfit so much. Get a little box, you won't regret it. Rita

Hi, I usually take 3 x erfa thyroid tablets, if I start to get too hot/fast pulse/feeling on edge I cut down to 2 tablets per day and this seems to slow down my metabolic rate. If you are taking 2x 25mcgs levothyroxine you could split them and take one later in the day if not already doing this ? Good luck
