Has anyone had experience with an intolerance to sugar. Last few times i've had a biscuit, bit of chocolate or a sweet food I've had stomach cramps, felt sick, indigestion, heartburn, bloating and constipation. Not had this before, wondering if it's a new symptom?
Query sugar intolerance: Has anyone had... - Thyroid UK
Query sugar intolerance
You could consider:
overgrowth of naturally occurring gastro-intestinal Candida albicans (there are other symptoms to look for)
irritable bowel syndrome - check out Monash University work on FODMAPS - sugars (to put it crudely) that cause the symptoms you describe
There's plenty on the web about IBS and FODMAPs
Try De-Gas,Simethicone . I felt the same.Do. Said it was lactose intolerance. No longer eat chocolate and now buy lactose free milk. Take at least 4 hours after thyroxine. I used to wake up with terrible griping pains.
Is it the gluten in the biscuit? Sugar also feeds candida and fungus. Tried cutting out wheat and seeing if it's just sugar?
Yes I've had this on a few occasions. I'm not tolerating dairy foods too well. After my birthday party where I thought let's just go for it and had pudding and cake I felt so ill. Burning sensation which I guess is heartburn. worse when I was sitting down or lying. I don't over indulge now. I find wine can upset me too think.its the acid.I think our thyroid problems make us over sensitive to some foods or drinks. Hot dairy goes straight through me.
Yes funny you mention that, because since I've been on Levothyroxine I sort of find chocolate and cakes distasteful, when I have that albeit on a little..after I wish I hadn't had it..gone completely off biscuits and don't enjoy food much any more, like fruit and veg..I do have reflux and take Omaprazole, but I think that stops acid which I think Levothyroxine needs..so I am taking Levothyroxine about 5 am and Omaprazole before lunch...I also take a probiotic tablet before tea, not sure it that helps anything but I feel better tummy wise..Constipation is a daily battle and has caused bowel to prolapse three years after the first op. I am starting to us suppositories as I feel the Sennas fibro gel etc etc prescribed bymdrs has made the condition worse..I think I,may have inherited underactive thyroid, but thankfully do not feel unwell, just need very deep sleeps in the afternoon, but can get out walking down town and back home up hills most days..I don't know about all the vitamins..I think D was on border line tho
HAther..😊
Hi there I agree with Agastache, you can take garlic tablets( strong ones) every day to kill off the candida. No sugar, fruit juice or fruit for a couple of months.
And caprylic acid tablets which are from coconut oil are excellentv for killing off candida.
Hi Chazza -
you had good replies already. Maybe you feel up to an exclusion diet to test out different possible culprits?
My doctor 'diagnosed' a problem with sugar when she asked if I felt hot after eating sugar... yes I did. I was offered endocrinological tests which carried certain risks considering my state of health so I decided to simply do without sugar.
I tested different types of sugar (going by how I felt and blood glucose levels). For example I can eat a bit of raw honey without problems, but all other sugars/simple carbs cause symptoms. I am gluten and grain free and my life long constipation problems have disappeared (also on T3) but return the moment I lapse and have a sweet 'treat'.
I am now on hydrocortisone for 'mild Addison's', which also helps. My advice is always to check the state of the adrenals.
Good luck sorting it out!
I was very unwell, my GP was disinterested, so started seeing a private nutritionist. I had various tests done, which showed that I had candida, SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth), a gut infection and goodness knows what else. I had to radically change my diet, which included giving up ALL sugar - including fruit and sugar substitutes. The intense, 24 hr nausea disappeared within a couple of weeks.
I'm not sure that I would call it an intolerance to sugar as such - I can manage something like an apple occasionally, but anything more "processed" tends to make me very nauseous now, and can last for days or weeks.
Wow that is a great testament to the power of nutrition being able to correct symptoms that GPs get no training in. That's why Integrative Drs are on the rise and nutrition. Is called the New Medicine. 😊
