Empty stomach but can you drink water?

Hey all

I work nights but try and take my T4 and T3 at 6.30am each day... when I sleep at nights all is well as I wake up and take them.... however, when on a night shift can I still drink water throughout the night and up to taking my meds? Or does the stomach have to be completely empty of water and food?

Thanks

Lindsayf,

Drink as much water as you like but for maximum absorption take Levothyroxine one hour before food and drink (other than water) or two hours after food and drink.

Thanks Clutter.... I try not to eat during a night shift but do drink lots of water... glad I’m not doing any damage by drinking water 😁

Whatever you do it's important to take your medication with a full glass on water to make sure it gets down to where it is absorbed. Otherwise it xsn get stuck on the way down!

You can still eat food during the night (in thyroid tablet terms), as long as you leave a two hour gap before your tablets.

You might find it easier to take your tablets at a different time. It's fine to take them at bedtime, or during the night if that suits you better.

If you decide to take a bedtime dose, miss this if having a blood test next day and take after test. You can also take bedtime as usual the same day.

I struggled with sleep if I took t3 as I finished a night shift. I would take it at the beginning of shift and I found it works well keeping me up. T4 made no odds but slept much better with t3 earlier.
