Almond milk

I’ve just made my first almond milk and it’s gorgeous! I know we hypos are supposed to eat it in moderation but I don’t know what that means... I’m just having it on my cereal, but there’s a large percentage of almonds compared to the shop bought stuff. Any thoughts?

Tried it and didn't like it. Tasted salty to me.

Why would it be salty?

I add only a pinch of himalayan salt & a teaspoon of maple syrup to a litre, neither are not perceptible.

Just my opinion almonds are not sweet to me and don't suit cereal.🙎

Some almonds are much more bitter than others.

I find the commercial milks very sweet, & very tasty in strong coffee & good muesli with zingy berries.

Are you talking about the goitrogenic effects of almonds? Forget it. If it starts to disagree with you, in any way, take less, or avoid it. If there are no ill effects - which there more than likely won't be - carry on as you are. Goitrogens are a bit of a red herring. :)

Yes it was the goitrogenic effect. I do love it so shall continue.

Almonds are good for us, high in protein & healthy oils. I personally don't find they have an effect on how much TH I need to take. Blended & watered down, even half a litre won't have that many in, & given a litre of shop bought is >90% water, you're better making your own.

Coconut milk from dried flakes is also easy to do, & nice in porridge. :)

Lynneypin I'm probably with Shirley Conran on mushrooms, when it comes to making one's own nut milks lol; but in terms of what moderating your intake might mean, this is what Dr Izabella Wents says: "after gluten, dairy and soy, almonds are one of the top reactive foods for people with Hashimoto’s. I often see people develop new food sensitivities because they have not healed their guts.

You run a greater risk of becoming sensitive to almonds if you eat them over and over again, day after day. If you don’t react to them now, rotate them with other foods, eating them every 3-4 days."

Of course, this then calls into question what "running a greater risk" might be quantified as ......so like most advice, you have to decide whether to take it or leave it. ;-)

I'm vegetarian, & the two handfuls of almonds I have most days provide up to 20% of my protein intake. I don't notice any difference if I'm away from home & don't eat these or my other regular nut, seed, fruit & veg goitrogens. However, soy clearly affects how I feel & how much TH I need. I initially worried a lot about the number of goitrogens I eat, & how to replace half my diet, until greygoose mentioned It'd be obvious if they were affecting me ~ thanks GG!

I have been veggie for 30 years, & eat a predominantly clean food diet. I'm pretty sure my gut flora is ecstatically happy due to a high intake of prebiotics, & daily kefir for probiotics.

I usually just eat my almonds washed down with kefir. This is the method I used for almond milk, & also coconut milk, which is pretty standard instructions on all websites: jamieoliver.com/news-and-fe... A basic liquidiser worked fine, though I know people who use a Vitamix.

I've left the skin on then added the ground slurry to my muesli.

A cup of almonds, soaked overnight. Ditch the soaking water. I use a Nutribullet and strain thru a milk bag.

Still experimenting. I have a dehydrator and apparently you can put it in there and use it to make biscuits etc .... so far I’ve used it in my raw chocolates but decided I prefer coconut for those.
