Foxglove,

There's no reason why hypothyroid patients shouldn't drink almond milk.

Thanks for reply will buy some almond milk - anything that aids sleep welcome. Don't know where I got the notion that it might affect thyroid!! I'm taking Nighty Night tea at the moment which aids sleep, husband says it's not surprising (the amount of aids I try) that I go to sleep but that I wake up. Buts that's someone who falls asleep in about 4 secs.

Foxglove,

Good luck! None of the 'usual' aids helped me and GP prescribed 7 x sleeping tablets a month so I could get some sleep. Things have been fine since I got thyroid meds right.

I too have had the sleeping tabs and yes they worked but. dr. not keen to prescribe. I am told easy to get on line but as I have addictive tendencies am wary Will give the almond milk a whirl

Expect your sleep is ok now but sleep can be helped by melatonin which is produced in the body, and influences the hypothalamus.

Certain foods contain substances which promote melatonin in the body. These are oats, bananas, apples oranges and tomatoes but the highest level of melatonin promoting substance is pineapple.

Fresh pine apple and juice are the highest in melatonin production over 225% higher than other sources. You should sleep in the dark but I have to have a nightlight as I am prone to tripping over stuff in the dark.

Thanks for reply, have tried melatonin supplements but didn't work for me. Didn't know pineapple was the richest food source of melatonin - will give that a try. at the moment I am using Avena Sativa drops, oats which have a calming effect so that is helping (I think)

in reply to foxglove

Pineapple helps to promote the manufacture of the hormone melatonin in the body. It affects hypothalamus so at night during rest growth hormone is produced.

I have a sleep disorder and if you still cannot sleep

it's rather a long time since you saw your G.P.

Think you should look at Clutter's post and may be ask for another range of tests to see if your meds are

right for you.

Apparently, almonds and therefore almond milk contain tyrosine which can affect thyroid levels.

Are thyroid levels affected for good or bad by almonds? ...enough to matter?

They affect thyroid levels in a negative way.

Why was almond milk said to aid sleep?

foxglove profile image
foxglove in reply to Silver_Fairy

If anyone knows why almond milk helps sleep other than the tryptophan content I would love to hear

Can you not go back to the lupus forum and ask why?

It's probably the high magnesium content

foxglove profile image
foxglove in reply to Silver_Fairy

Possibly is the magnesium but I'm going to "live dangerously" and give it a try. to be honest think moderation in everything applies and not really taking it too seriously, sorry if this upsets those who do...maybe because they need to

in reply to Silver_Fairy

So what would be a good alternative then...? I want something other than water to make protein smoothies but would prefer not to use cow's milk. If almond milk is not an option either, and I guess soy milk is a big no no, then what can we use...oat milk?

Coconut milk? Goats milk? Kefir?

in reply to Silver_Fairy

Coconut milk sounds good as I am already using virgin coconut oil for cooking:-)

I prefer goats milk - but if you are actually trying to avoid all animal milks, that doesn't help much.

I also like goats milk and butter and cheese, yummy. Use some oat milk as it's claimed to help bp etc.. Curious enough now to try almond milk, the usual conflicting reports. After all statistics (and the Bible) can prove or disprove anything Not taking this too seriously - as you probably can gather, but grateful for all advice given

in reply to helvella

No, not at all. I love feta cheese...so thanks for the tip!

Oat milk tastes good and seems to help with lots! give it a go. I'm chancing the almond as different opinions on that. Wish us both luck

Hi foxglove,

I recently experimented with almond flour and could barely stay awake after eating my baking. I checked through the ingredients and almond flour disrupts thyroid function so I won't be trying that again.

Good to hear different reactions, seems the usual need to try!
