Hi all
I started taking 40mg of carbimazole on Wednesday night and have work up this morning with a sore throat (which I was warned about).
Does anyone know if it’s too soon to be a white blood cell problem?
Thanks
Al

It's so difficult at this time of year when sore throats are common. When I started anti thyroid treatment I was worried about knowing what to do because I work in a school and get frequent sore throats in winter. I thought I could be needing a blood test every week just to check! But my endo told me only to be concerned if I had a really bad sore throat coupled with feeling very unwell or if I had mouth ulcers. I ended up having a blood test to check white cells only one time and that was because I had a sore throat that wasn't shifting after a week. All was well though. Always best to err on the side of caution though and I'm not a doctor so if you feel worried give your gp practice a ring and they can advise. Best wishes.
My endo's advice was similar to Qwerty12345's. Definitely call for mouth ulcers, but apparently the sore throat is also quite distinctive and typically associated with mouth sores. Unexplajned fever can also be a sign.
The thing is, letting it get out of hand could be very dangerous. If you're worried I would ring the surgery, explain the situation and see whether they can arrange a telephone consultation the same day.
Thanks for your advice. I went to the GPs today and got my blood taken. However the hospital failed to get the results back to the GPs before closing time.
I've just got a sore throught and no new symptoms. I haven't taken my carbimazole today.
Therefore deciding whether to go to A&E or wait until monday.....
