Carbizamole and sore throat

Hi I've been on 20 mg for about a week of carbizamole and for the last three days I've had a sore throat I feel ok . Do I need to get it checked.

I don't think any of us is in a position to say "No, of course not. Ignore what it says clearly on the Patient Information Leaflet. You will be fine."

The seriousness of being wrong and NOT getting checked is such that no-one should in any way suggest you were wrong to go and get checked. It is especially important in the early days of taking carbimazole.

I would say yes, definitely have it checked. My husband had it and developed neutropenia. You might be still ok despite the sore throat but it’s better to have it checked. If your white cells are low than you would need to come off the drug for a week. Hopefully it’s not that.

Hi.

I don't take carbimazole but a sore throat is a known side effect and it's important and must be reported to your doctor as soon as possible. I personally wouldn't take any more tablets and get onto your surgery first thing tomorrow and ask to speak to your GP as urgent. Don't be fobbed off by the receptionist. If you really have no luck due to the parlous state of our surgeries, seek the prompt advice of a pharmacist....even if there is a pharmacy open now.

I was given a letter explaining the sore throat business a week ago with tablets but I thought that I would also feel need to feel unwell with it, to make it serious. If I need a blood test . Gp only does those on Wednesday so might need to visit a and e.

I thought that too when I first started carb and had a bit of a sore throat. I went to the GP though and was given a blood test immediately - without any argument from the Rottweiler receptionist which shows how seriously they take it.

As it was my white blood cells were fine. Next time I got a sore throat I saw the practice nurse who spoke to one of the GPs and we decided to ‘wait and see’ which was ok with me.

Like you I felt that I would feel ‘really’ ill if there was a problem but I wasn’t prepared to take the risk. I think definitely better to be safe than sorry.

The same happened to me when first diagnosed. I was on 5 mg for a week and took a sore throat. The chemist had forewarned me to stop the carbimazole immediately which I did.

I remember the Drs surgery was closed for a half day so rang out of hours to report my symptoms. At that stage I had a sore throat and it was inflamed.

He told me to go straight to my own Dr next morning. As the day progressed I became feverish and my Fitbit showed 105 testing heart rate. It wasn’t until 10.30 pm that I finally decided to take myself to A and E. (Hubble drove) Not long after arrival I had bloods taken and an ECG.

Sat there all night and finally at 5am got through to the treatment room.

The Dr said I was right to have come and reassured me that there was no decrease in white blood cells. He gave me intravenous paracetamol and antibiotic and even though I hadn’t slept all night I left the hospital feeling a bit better - throat no longer burning and reassured about my bloods.

I probably wouldn’t have slept all night at home anyway (worrying)

My heart rate is allways high. But I've checked it and it's 99 that's not much different to what it allways is. The only other symptoms I have had was occasionally struggling to swallow my food.
