Sore throat and Carbimazole

Trying-To-Juggle profile image

I’ve been on Carbi for just over a year. The side effects leaflet says in big letter to tell GP urgently if you get a sore throat etc.

So I’ve come down with a raging burning and scratchy throat and wondering if this is something I need to report. Seems silly to call gp over something like this!!

"The side effects leaflet says in big letter to tell GP urgently if you get a sore throat etc."

If that is what the patient information leaflet says so prominently, then it's hardly silly to do exactly what is suggested if you have this side effect.

I would either call your out of hours number or 111 and explain exactly what your symptoms are and what he warning in the patient information leaflet says.

You need a blood test done so best to call 111

Thank you both. I called 111 last night and am going to the gp this morning with a view to getting a blood test.

Glad you’ve got that organised. When I had my first sore throat when I was taking carbimazole I had a blood test done straight away - I didn’t even have to argue with the receptionist to have it done - which shows how seriously they took my symptoms.

Next time I had a sore throat I saw the nurse who spoke to a GP and we decided on a ‘wait and see’ approach which I was happy with.

Hope it goes well this morning.

As far as I know it's only if you have a temperature as well. I've debated over this several times but as I haven't had a temperature I've not done anything about it. It's difficult to judge as I was told the same.

Neutropenic sepsis can present with a low temperature, check out sepsis trust website.

So I saw a nurse. She didn’t seem to grasp about the warning on the leaflet. I’ve been put on penicillin. No temperature. No blood test.

I’m meant to be having an operation to have my thyroid removed this coming Wednesday. I hope this won’t stop them doing it....

You should have had a blood test !

If you have a virus it may well delay the op, best to call your surgeon on Monday for advice on what to do.
