My daughter is 26 and has been pretty unwell for a few years. This year everything has escalated. She was already asthmatic but had been under control for many years. This year she started getting very out of breath. Her anxiety levels have been through the roof. After some routine blood tests she was told she was vit d deficiant and anemic.
She was medicated for this and blood tests repeated after 6 weeks. She was told her vit d and iron levels were now ok. At this point she was told she had a thyroid problem. We were surprised to find it was overactive as she has gained about 5 stone in 2 years. Legs and feet swollen really badly. She has gone up a sixe and half in shoes. The doctor thought it may be a false reading so was sent for more blood test a fortnight later the results were:
Serum free T4 level 37.6
Serum free T3 level 14.2
Serum TSH level < 0,01
Serum c reactive protein level 17 out of range but satisfactory
Erythrocyte sedimentation rate 31out of range but satisfactory.
I dont really understand what these mean.
Dr has arranged a throid ultrasound and referral to endocrinologist. She had been put on carbimazole.
Can anyone recommend anything i can do to help her? Questions she can ask the consultant when her appointment comes through?
Thank you

Sadly the Thyroid Anti-bodies - TPO & Tg - have not been tested to rule out Hashimotos. It is possible your daughter is Hyper at the moment as with Hashimotos you can swing from Hyper to Hypo. Without the anti-bodies being tested it is not possible to know. Hahshimotos is Auto-immune.
Recently we read here on the Forum of another member being given Carbimazole for Hyper when she was Hypo.
I would obtain copies of the Iron and VitD results to check the levels and post them here for member to comment. Docs often say fine when they mean fine. Folate and B12 should also be tested.
Your daughter must be feeling poorly - hope things soon settle.
I am not a Medic - only a Hashi's sufferer with a B12 issue
PS Anaemia can cause breathlessness as oxygen levels are low. Thyroid hormones also impact on the lungs and moisture levels I have read ..... The last two tests are inflammatory markers.
I agree with Marz, it's imperative she get her antibodies tested. This ought to be done automatically, but doctors are so ignorant about thyroid, they don't understand the results, anyway! But we do.
Hi there i am one of them people who marz mentioned i was diagnosed being hyper in july but never go diagnosed with hashis till late September so stuck on carbi but on a titration dose now, so my symptons are up and down, i also have had all the symptons that youre daughter has, it took me around 2 months for a slight improvement and then started to feel a little normal but have taken a slump since lower dose. But please take advice given from this great forum, i am always bugging people here☺
I will certainly make sure she insists on her antibody level being checked.
The results she had were:
T4 37.6 pmol/L 10.30-24.50pmol/L
T3 14.2pmol/L 3.50-6.50 pmol/L
TSH <0.01 mlU/L 0.30-5.50mlU/L
Hope that makes a little more sense. I have been reading up quite a bit more today and am so pleased to have found people she/i can ask for advice. Thanks again
